For the actual bumper, I started with a 4"x 1 1/2"x .125 wall piece of square tubing. I wanted it to wrap around the frame rails similar to the way the original bumper looks. So i opened up a large pocket on the back of of the tubing and now the new cross member is nested inside the bumper.

The tubing was a little too square for my liking, so i started putting some some angles on it to give it some style. I cut a pie shaped piece out of the tubing then bent it and welded back to itself.

Next i had to open up some square holes in the bumper so it could slip over the eyelets that come from the cross member.

Here's how it is looking now all put together.

That's about it for now. Gotta order some parts and get a plan together for the rear bumper/spare tire carrier. Let me know on any ideas.

How are you attaching them together?

    Looks nice.

Oh, BTW - I box the front of mine with C Channel like your front cross member. Just weld it in place. Do the same in the rear.

Hey redrider, check out this website:
    http://www.atozfabrication.com/store/home.php?cat=263http://
It has some good ideas on rear bumpers/tire carriers on later jeeps but they also sell a lot of bumper fabrication items separately. I see you're in Sonoma, I'm in Cotati and I'm doing a frame off on my 58 cj5. Good luck with the project!
