    My brother has a 350 v-8 in his M38a1, but I think the 4.3 v-6 fits better.

I think most Chevy V8s in pre-72 Jeeps are "legacy" installations. V6s have become plentiful and are today a more popular choice. The V8s like the 5.3L are popular in the '72 and later models, but there's more room under the hood in those.

Unless you just have to have the V8, the V6s are going to be a lot easier installation.

lots of info on the Novak site - www.novak-adapt.com

I saw a 350 swap and it was really tight. I see the 5.3 in my truck right now and i don't see it fitting in my CJ....... Although that would be super sweet. Maybe the 4.8?

The 4.8 is the same engine as the 5.3, externally.

I don't know much about the M38A1's but I put a 5.3 in my '56 Willys Wagon in which both are similar because they both have very small engine bays. I was always told that putting in a V8 in the Willys will create a lot of overheating issues and to steer away from it. I call BS on that!!!! Take the right precautions on your engine, cooling and exhaust and you will have a good experience. I live in Las Vegas where it gets stupid hot and I haven't had any overheating problems whether sitting idle on the freeway or slowly crawling over the rocks on the trails. Let me know if I can help.

Thanks guys, I appreciate the input. I agree, the V6 does look like an easier fit. The rebuild project starts next week and I have both engines available to test fit. There won't be much of the old M38A1 left when we're done. Total frame off rebuild with: Dana 44's cut to fit, lockers, 4 wheel disc brakes, 35" bead locks, YJ spring-over, PSC power steering, PRP seats (heated - wife), HEATER - wife, Warn 8274, SM420, Warn OD, etc, etc. Frame will be extended to mount the springs, front fenders clipped, fuel tank relocated to under body, tub modified for seats
