CJ-3B frame number - or is it the VIN?

I found a number stamped on my CJ-3B when I brought it home Saturday, on the top of the frame just in front of the body on the passenger side.

Looking on the CJ3B page, I figure it is either a VIN for a 1956 3B, or a frame number for a very early 3B, possibly a 54 or even a 53.

But how do I know which it is? Is there another place I can check the frame, or a positive way to tell which this is?

I forget, I have a 53 3b and it wasnt there.
