48 Willys tilt steering

    I'm looking for information to put a tilt or newer steering colum in a 48 Willys.

    Pretty much find a later CJ GM steering column or a GM camaro column. It will take fab work to get it right, but defiantly doable. I cannot help you much more than that, i only did the GM column in my CJ5, and i have since removed it to goto a steel tube type column.

    I remember seeing a column advertised in Jp magazine back in 98 or 99 about a tilt column for a flatty. It was long and skinny like the original and looked very similiar so you didnt look like an aftermarket. Cant remember the name of the company though.

    Flaming River has some nice columns that would look great in a Flatty, but they are $$$ about $350 i think, but it is all brand new parts. They can be ordered in bling bling chrome and black finish. A very nice looking column though.

    Thanks for the information, I will check out the leads. I have seen the ones for flaming river, I may have to go with that. I'm selling off my misc chevy parts and motors to build this 48.

    I have also used IDIDIT Columns, and Pontiac in the Flatties.

    Flaming River has a tilt/telescoping column now too, if you really want to drop the big bucks into your heep. Pretty sure it's not made specifically for Jeep, but that's what welders and chop saws are for!

    Bruce: I had the old GM tilt column in my '68 switched out to a Flaming River tilt. Worked great and much tighter than the old loose GM. Yes, they are a bit more expensive than a rebuilt Centech GM one, but I think they are worth it, and thay will never get sloppy. :)

    Tilt steering or not, your still real close to the steering wheel and its hard to get in and out. Consider moving the seat back a little. I moved mine back about 5 inches when I did mine. I'm 6'1" so it didn't take me long to decide on the adjustment. You have to notch out the wheel well, and fab/adjust your seat bracket but nothing too hard. Good luck. .02

    Also another trick if you are not concerned too much about the dash or original look. You can notch the dash where the current tube steering column sits and raise the tube up on the dash, i did this on my cj5 and pushed the column in a little father, and i can get in very very easy now

    Thanks again, for the information.
    I'm checking out now which way to go. I just put the headers on the 350, so now I have to firgure out the power steering, and my alt, and power steering pump, so I can have my radiator built.
    Good lookinb Flattie, 48. Mine is coming along pretty good, with very little modifications.

    You can use a column from a postal jeep if you want to keep the skinny column look and still go with the Saginaw conversion. This is the route I went on advice from others here. Still don't have it done, but I have all the parts on the garage floor... :rofl:
