Need some help. I want to remove my steering column to get my old tub off. What is the easiest and quickest method? I have read my old JEEP book until the cover has come off and it talks alot about removing the steering wheel but not much about the steering column from the steering hub located at the frame. I have noticed a bolt on the steering column right above the steering hub. Is that all I have to loosen to get the column out? And the support on the dash is loose. I have looked at 27 different threads on this site and the 3B site with no luck. Anyone want to chime in would be appreciated.
    Thanks
    Al

The column is part of the steering gear box. To separate the two you must disassemble the box as the worm gear is part of the steering shaft. Easiest way would most likely be to remove the drag link from the pitman arm on the box, unbolt the box from the frame, and remove the assembly first then pull the body. Either that or remove the steering wheel and then lift the tub over the top of the column.

What I did was I took off the side cover off the steering box and then unbolted those top 3 bolts that hold the column on and just twisted it so it unthreaded it from the pitman arm. Be sure to catch the little balls from that bottom bering.

yea i advize against that method. Its messy and getting it back together is a nightmare. Id pull the wheel and unbolt it from the frame, pull the drag link and horn wire and its out

Its not that hard to put back together. I had my in and out a half dozen times during the restoration. Putting the balls back in isn't that hard either.

well if the fenders are off and its a clean box its not too bad if youve done it before. But nows the time to rebuild it and clean it up if it needs it. In my cj5 it was simple because the fenders were off. In my 2a i was fighting with it for hours. If your removing the tub and going to rebuild the box anyway, by all means pull the 3 screws and twist it out

Looks like I have good info. here. I did read in my book (Flat Fender) that pulling the wall off the steering box and unscrewing it is the way but I don't want the bearings (balls) to go flying out. so I might just undo the drag link and pull the box. Still I need to get into the box and check it out since this flatty has been in moth balls for so long. The fenders are off so I might as well jump into it. I will update my progress tonight. Thanks guys.
