I'm just about to put my SM465 in my '73 (I know it's taken way too long).

The old bell housing was not compatible with the swap so I have a new one. Turns out that both the old one was missing one of the two dowel pins. The new one is missing both of its pins. (I suspect that is the cause of the pilot bushing coming apart in this jeep was due to misalignment caused by the missing pin.)

My questions for you guys today is about swapping bell housings.

Do I need to dial in the new housing? What is the best / easiest way to do it (currently the engine is in the jeep and the bell is on the trans)? And, where can I get new / replacement dowel pins?

    I'll post pic's if you'd like.

Thanks for your buckets of experience and knowlege!

Here's a picture! (I know how much you all like to see 'em!) :) :)

I think I can drive the one good dowel pin out (anyone ever tried?) but that still leaves me one pin short and the new bellhousing may not match the original (I remember dialing in bombproof bell housings on drag racing cars of my friends in the past)

Lakewood sells bellhousing dowel pins for Chevy blocks but not for the AMC.

    Anyone do this before?

    Here is the old bellhousing

Grab the dowel with a pair of pliars and twist. It will come out. I'll check my old bellhousing and if it has a dowel in it you can have it. I'll let you know.

Thanks all! I did get the one pin out that I had . . . carefully twisting with channel locks till it finally broke loose and then found another used pin at a machine shop that must have been in San Diego when Cabrillo first set foot here! :)
Thank goodness that there are still a few pack rats in the world!

You guys have convinced me that I don't need to do anything to match the new bellhousing. Just for my interest I'll put a dial indicator on it to see how it runs.

    Thanks again!
