I hate to ask, but I’m at my wit’s end. I’ve spent 4 evenings with a multimeter trying to get my lights working correctly. I had everything working perfectly until I tried to install a hazard switch. Jeep (72 CJ5) didn’t have one before (or a turn signal switch). I got the turn signal (Sparton SCS-3R6) wired up and working. When I tried to install the new hazard switch, everything still worked, but the front ambers came on with the brake lights. Apparently the new switch has 3 posts instead of 5. The diagram I have is conflicting as it doesn’t match the wiring list. Diagram has all lights going from light to hazard to turn signal. List says fronts to hazard to signal but rear straight to signal. I don’t know if it’s a signal internal wiring issue or if I just haven’t hit the magic combination yet. My signal plug is the stacked pyramid - numbered as below looking at the end of the signal harness.

    1
    2 3
    4 5 6

    What worked pre-hazard was:
    1- right rear
    2- left rear
    3- brake
    4- left front
    5- right front
    6- B+ from signal flasher

Can someone tell me if I got this correct? After reading and searching, I know the first (and correct) response is spend time with the B+ and multimeter. I think I’m there and need more help. At least this would help me know if I got that part right. Thanks guys!

I'd have to look through it - no time right now.

The '72 TSM has an unusual pictorial wiring diagram that may make this easy or hard to figure out. If you can't figure it out from the '72 TSM, there is a '74 TSM online at www.oljeep.com A '74 has basically the same circuits as a '72 or a '73.

The TSM is quite explicit about this -

Do you have the '72 TSM? It will help you a lot.

I have a 72 TSM, and I didn’t know that was back there. :( I just tried it, but my switch must be wired differently (bought separately). Rear signals work, front right works, but no brake lights. I’ll check the later diagrams you linked and try again. I may just end up with front brake lights since the hazard switch only has 2 outputs instead of 4 like the factory. Thank you for sending me in the right direction!

Any documents with your switch? if not, you can look inside and see which wire does what. You can then move the wires around in the plug. Look closely and you'll see a tab that holds the connector in the shell. You can reach in with a jeweler's screwdriver or other thin sharp tool and release the tab. Then wire up the plug like the factory did.

Search and you may find old posts about repairing the SignalStat switch. This may give you some insight on what's inside and what the mechanism does.

The 74 TSM has my switch in there! I had the terminals ID’d correctly, which is good, but I still have front brake lights. I’ll dig deeper this evening to see if there’s a way to get hazards to the front without having them directly tied to the rear.

Is the switch grounded, sounds like a feedback thru the switch.
