I have no experience w/ inspections, but here's a thought...

The CHP isn't going to know that chevy 4.3 swaps weren't common at the dealer if he questions it (much how Jeep frequently swapped out the F-134 in favor of the Buick 225 at the dealer). Talk the guy's ear off about fun Jeep history & particulars and he'll want to "pass" you and get the heck out of there!!

I bought my Jeep about 4 years ago. The Jeep was registered in Oregon and had no problems getting my tags in CA.

Maybe it was because I didn't register it non-operational until after changing the title over to me in CA.

When I registered it at the DMV, the person came out and inspected it (he had a checklist) and then completed the registration/title change (didn't even need to show proof of insurance).

When the registration came up for renewal, I registered it as non-operational.

Can you try another DMV office - maybe they'll take care of it - I've found that service varies depending on who you get at CA DMV.

can you trailer it to the DMV? they should be willing to go out and inspect, and they won't know what is/isn't jeep. all they need to do is see the number plate permanently affixed to the vehicle.

I missed the part about it not able to run when I originally read your post.

Yes, somebody will be need to inspect it, but as "$ sink" pointed out, they are not going to know what is Jeep vs non-Jeep parts. They look for basic stuff like VIN number on vehicle matching title, and required parts (lights, seatbelts, etc.)...so you should be able to tow it in and get the title transferred.

    double R,

You are in the middle of a felony and I don't believe I would continue this on the www. You CANNOT remove a vin plate. The officer is going to cuff you and take you to jail if you call him to your house and show him that loose VIN plate.

Someone please correct me if I am wrong.

Chalk another to my quick reading - I missed that you bought a VIN plate...

I believe there is a way to legally aquire a new VIN for your vehicle, but just switching them out is illegal. Check out this link:

    http://www.boss302.com/legal.htm

As far as CA knows, you might be trying to put a new VIN on a stolen vehicle.

This link may have the answer you need (I didn't read in detail):

    http://www.dmv.ca.gov/pubs/reg_hdbk_pdf/ch01.pdf

    See section 1.070...tell them it's a Volkswagen! :D

I bought my JEEP in OR and brought it to CA like some one else mentioned. I took it to the DMV office in Twentynine Palms and the gal there caught a superimposed number and also questioned the screws that hold the vin tag on. I did get it all straightened out but this vehicle was way above board and still got the eviel eye from DMV. I think the problems in CA stem from guys like Boyd Coddington buying out of state tags and putting them on basically "new" cars. Mike

You might want to confirm it has to be a chp officer to check the jeep. A few yaers ago (10) I went thru this with a car i bought. All I needed was a police officer of any type to match numbers. And I was able to locate a sheriff who was car buff, and could relate to my problem. Paper signed.

My understanding is the DMV CAN do the inspection, but if they determine there is something fishy with the VIN, then the CHP has do the sign-off.

My experience is that the DMV wants to collect the inspection fee and match a serial number to a title.

What their job description calls for is to compare the serial on the title to the serial tag FASTENED to the vehicle.

If it matches, then their job is done. Any other problems or questions with the vehicle is someone else's job.

Go to DMV, pay your money, keep your mouth shut and you'll be the proud owner of a ______ jeep.

My experience was quite the opposite, at least here in KS. They take the job seriously and it's not a laughing matter of just slapping a VIN on the tub and going down there. That IS a felony unfortunately. The PIN tag should never be removed from the tub of the vehicle period.

JMO if you can't do it legally you shouldn't have done it in the first place. I ran into issues due to a fiberglass tub swap somewhere in MI along the way and someone not going through proper channels to get a VIN from the state of MI for the Jeep.

Luckilly the state of KS accepted the VIN off of the frame since I had a title that matched from MI.

I'm sorry but selling a title and tag is illegal with no vehicle, putting it on another vehicle is a felony as well. I've had many discussions in the past year with law enforcement about it...

i don't want to break any laws or have my vehicle illegal...is there another way i can register this vehicle and have it street legal? (i think the most i can get is probably a kit car type registration, which only legalizes the vehicle to be driven off-road)...

is the serial number on the frame of any help?...i can maybe track down the title for that serial number and see if there's a title listed under someones name...

i definitely want to go the non-illegal route after hearing that it's a felony plus i don't want the CHP taking the cj-6 away and sending it through the compactor...
