I'd like to convert the front drum brakes on my Dana model 30 axle to disc brakes. It is a 1973 axle i put under my '59. I stripped a model 30 from a mid '80's cj. Has anyone done this? I figure it must have by now and i'm just trying to save some headaches. Thanks.

I did the exact same thing. I used 1982 parts, But it should be the same. It has the two bolt caliper brackets right?
First i striped the axle down to the bare axle tube. Then i took my existing inner axle shafts and put them together with the outer axle shafts off the disc brake axle, so i had 82/73 axles shafts. I need to do this because the outer shafts on the drum brake and disc brake axles are different. The knuckles off the newer axle will bolt on to the inner "C" on the 73 axle. After that it is just reassembling the axle with the newer parts with from the knuckles out. I used 1982 brake lines if you have a lift i heard lines off a Chevy truck will work also. You will have to do some internal mods the MC also but there are tons of threads on that on this board. If you have stock wheels you might have an interference problem like i had that required me to by after market ones, becouse the rotors/calipers are bigger than the stock drums.
This was one of the best mods i did to my jeep. I can lock up 31's with manual brakes.
Good luck and i will be happy answer any questions you have.

Thanks for the quick reply. I'll be attempting this in about a month from now and was just trying to gather some info first. I kind of assumed i would have to change the outer shafts after taking some measurements but i was'nt sure if i could use any of the drum brake stuff. Btw, it is the two bolt caliper style. I'll also have the backing plates for my '48 flattie! Where are you in Grafton county? Thats right were i am. Small world huh?
