225 reverse chatter

    Sounds like the pinion shafts ramped back down to their rest position and maybe some wear on the clutch plates.
    Remember the Powerlock is a limited slip, NOT a locking differential. If the clutches are worn, even a little, then it can act like an open differential even though there may be some resistance from one axle to another. You have to have a bias between both axle shafts for them to work correctly. An old-time trick to get them to lock up firmer is to gently apply the brakes to get that bias so the torque can allow the pinion shafts to ramp up the case and apply the clutches tighter.
    The figure eights are designed to help decrease chatter after the gear oil has been changed and the additive put in. This gets the gear oil and additive mixed in together and allows it to work in between the clutches. Again, the idea is to eliminate or minimize clutch chatter when turning corners.

    Nickmil, thanks for your input. As stated, this one sat for years. It is my understanding, the Powr-Loc can be set up to engage at 2 levels by shifting or adding clutches. For snow covered hard surface street/highway use, is there any advantage to either clutch arrangement?

    You can adjust how tight the clutches lock up by changing the thickness of clutches, # of clutches, or by adding more belleville spring clutches (dish shaped clutches) to add more preload. The tighter the powerlock the less give there will be between the axles so while it may be good off road, may not be so good on slick icy or snow covered roads. Most people I know in those conditions prefer something less aggressive to keep from slipping and sliding.

    Yes.
    Even in stock form, a properly working powerlock is a handful on snow streets.

    Thanks for all your imput. Nic - Your diagnosis sounds right on. Since the chatter has become erratic, it would appear the shafts are hanging up part of the time. Could the whale oil be getting closer to the shafts? LOL

    Diaphram type and lever and tube stock assembly = chatter for me.
    Just had the flywheel resurfaced and should know if it is still chattering by Sunday.
    I am also working out how to build an AA type clutch chain situation. Hopefully one or both will cure my chatter.

    Which clutch is chattering??

    Just read this entire thread, sounds like some of you are talking about the clutch at the flywheel, and the rest are talking about the clutches inside the limited slip differential.
