I am having a problem with my 81 258 4.2L 6-banger.I just got it and have to get it smogged. I have seen all of the vacuum diagrams (Haynes, Chilton, Spynet, etc). They all show Pulse Air Valves, two solenoid switches, three solenoids, etc.

I do fine with the vacuum hoses, until it comes to the P/Air valves, solenoids and switches. Mine has three switches on the firewall, not two. One is green (4"), natural (10"), and pinkish (???). Also, no P/Air Valves. I have been told that some didn't come with them, but I can't find a vacuum diagram for it.

Also, there is a black colored canister between the air pump and diverter valve that has a vacuum running out of the top. Where does that go?

Any one with anything that looks/sounds similar please HEELLPPP!!!!!!

    wrong info from those books
you have CEC (Computerized Emission Control) system
pulse air was much better system, but didn't start until 1983 model year.
you have an air pump and air injection manifold, along with endless miles of vacuum hoses and switches.
The system is simple in theory and operation; in the field, and on older and higher mileage vehicles, it can be challenging due to the many "mechanics" over the years that think they have it "nailed".
on Calif models, you have upstream and downstream check valves; upstream would be to the air injection manifold attached to the ex manifold; downstream is via the check valve and metal tube that connects to the cat converter. There is also a vacuum controlled valve in line but behind the diverter valve that directs the air flow: up or down.
On the grille, there should have been the emissions label that would have diagramed the vac hose routings, along with tune-up specs/information.
The correct function of this system is going to be related to how much of it is still installed on the engine; missing components may be hard to locate as the CEC system was only used for a couple of years.
are you a manual trans or automatic ?
I have vac diagrams I could post up and/or send to you.

    yep
and they can fall onto the air injection/ex manifold and scorch/burn real easy
AMC called it the CEC system...
those of us that had to work on it called it something else........
    can't print it here !
the diagnostic equipment that each dealer had to buy to service/read codes was pretty unreliable; different PROMS for different years/equipment
and the MCU (computer) was up under the dash in an almost inaccessable location if you had to remove/replace it; held in place by 3 tiny little hex head screws that were a PIA to reach/loosen/reinstall.
I know I left a couple out of some Jeeps more than once!
