I have a 1974 CJ5 with an old gas tank. It is just sitting on top of skid plate without hardware. Can you guys help me with sourcing tank, all attachment hardware, and other odds and ends to replace tank? Got an exploded parts diagram? Also, should there be a trim piece where filler neck meets up with body in rear? Help is greatly appreciated!

You can buy a replacement tank in either steel or plastic. Check the usual Jeep aftermarket parts suppliers. There is a picture of the fuel tank in the TSM, free to read and download here. JeepĀ® Parts Manuals online That picture will show you how the parts go together. There is a grommet in the body that is available. The hoses are available. MTS shows what's available - MTS COMPANY, L.C. - Jeep CJ/YJ Gas Tanks

Much of the hardware you will have to take from another Jeep, or make, or improvise. There is a limited amount of parts support for intermediate Jeeps.

This topic has been covered many times in old posts, if you search.

I hate messin with the tank on my 75 CJ.. I have no diagram. The only trim on my filler spout is a rubber grommet type affair. Found this diagram.... It's actually for a 76 but looks just like my 75..

Mmm. That's for '73-75. The '76-on tank is supported by the skid plate and helfd to the skid by a strap. Through '75, the tank was supported by the 3 brackets shown (there are two brackets at the rear - one is shown). These years, the skid plate is an extra cost option that bolts on over the tank. Same picture as I referred to in the '74 TSM linked above.

I have a brand new MTS tank that I did not end up using that I can sell you. Still in the box. In order to make it work, you will have to fab up some straps or get a skid plate from a 76+ CJ. Let me know if you're interested.

I also have the strap if you end up going with the 76+ skid plate.

Not to get in the way of a possible sale with chosen1608, but I got my tank for a 72-75 from Rockauto for about $70, then ordered the filler hose and vent from ebay. All worked out great. Just like stated previously the 72-75 do not use straps but use 3 tabs that mount it to the frame.

NB '72 is different in that it uses 4 lines, one from each corner of the tank. '73 excludes the expansion tank, instead using the liquid check valve. '70-71-72 is a bit different from '73 on.
