My family has had this CJ5 since ~1992. We used it on the road as a third vehicle for a number of years before it was retired to firewood duty due to a number of minor clutch, steering, brake problems.

Now that I have a fully equipped shop, it is on my roster to bring to my place to return to serviceable operation and maybe even give it a driving restoration.

Back when we purchased it in the "pre-internet days", we knew it was somewhat special as a 66-71 Buick V6 model but it also had a number of odd features we always attributed to being modification from a previous owner.

Now as I'm assessing it's needs, I'll be darned if it doesn't seem to be a factory Renegade 1 that was resprayed metallic blue over the factory Plum/Purple.

Any help verifying this would be appreciated. At the very least, I want to preserve the Renegade features and heritage. It may even be somewhat restored to decent example of a 1970 Renegade 1.

    Items of note:
    1) One 15x8 Kelsey-Hayes steel deep dish with an original white wall polyglass tire that was still being used as a spare in 1992.

    2) Factory rear spare tire carrier and tailgate

    3) June 1970 production date

    4) Intact factory Plum/Purple paint high on the interior firewall remains from when it was repainted blue.

    5) Intact factory white on grill under the blue paint.

    6) Intact factory black on the windshield frame under the blue paint.

    7) 9 leaf springs front spring. I recall removing the rear springs in the 90s which maybe had even more leafs? One of them was bent/broken. I just remember them looking odd with so many leafs

    8) Factory Amp and Oil Gauges left of the steering column

    9) I took pictures of the drivers side firewall electrical connectors because I remember there being some sort of possible Renegade wiring difference specific to the model.

    10) I do know that it had a flanged Dana 44 with 3.73s and possibly a tired limited slip as I recall. The transmission is a 3 speed... T86? I want to say.

    11) Factory rollbar and factory bucket seat mounts with different seats swapped in.

I will try to spot frame differences when we drag it onto the car trailer.

Anything else I should be looking for? Most things unique to the Renegade 1 seems to be there, yes? I'm excited to have this verified considering it's been right under our nose for nearly 30 years.

    Thanks in Advance,
    Greg

Here is a link to an album of pictures related to item believe to be Renegade 1 related.

I've included a photo of the factory Plum Renegade 1 that I believe this Jeep resembled when new.

I'm not an expert on the Renegades, but check to see if the engine oil pan has a skid plate, and the chassis should have gussets over the spring perches.

It does in fact have the oil pan skid plate and the front frame rails are boxed in.

The engine bay area is boxed on all Jeeps of your vintage, but there are additional gussets over the spring perches on the Renegades. The oil pan skid plate is a pretty good indicator of your Jeep is a Renegade.

My parts R1 is also purple with a white engine compartment. I'd get pictures, but the "security" hornets are currently in residence.

I'd appreciate any paint detail pictures you can send me... Even this winter. With two little kids, I'm 100% sure it won't be ready for paint this year. LOL

Gauges, resistor, skid, carrier, rare white grille mated to plum paint, original street tire with whitewall spare.... no question at all...this is a Ren1. Good to see you on here, was wondering if you would join up Greg
