    morning all!
tonight I plan on replacing my head gasket on my fhead motor. anybody here have the torque specs for those bolts? I have a chilton manual, but I'm wondering if the FSM everybody always talks about provides a different spec?

thank you all in advance, and hopefully this will only take an hour, or 2 at most.

Chilton's, Hayes, etc, are junk compared to a factory FSM. Just so you know.

My FSM shows 60 to 70 ft/lbs for the F-head. Also there is a recommended tightening sequence/pattern to be followed.

Run a tap into the threads to clean them first.

Whats the sequence? (2 would be the carb bolt) 8 and 9 would be towards the front of the motor

    1 2 3
    4 5
    6 7
    8 9

Sure it would. It's obviously a joke ... on the cover of a humor magazine. "Edgy" at worst.

Funny. (y) Howard, did you make that just for this post? We ought to use it regularly.

I wonder how they got the dog to keep his head straight and look to the side. I suspect that he turned his head in the next half-second.

Take that picture showing the tightening sequence and put in all your head bolts finger tight.
then set your torque wrench for 30 footpounds and tighten in sequence follow the picture.
then set your torque wrench for 60 footpounds and tighten in sequence again. Now you can either stop here or reset the torque foe 70 footpounds and do it again.
Wait about 15 minutes and then do the sequence one more time at 70 footpounds. (or 60 footpounds if you stopped there.) )

After you have put everything back onto your engine and are ready to start it, then start it and get it good and warm. You know, drive around a little.

now you want to take off both the carb and the valve cover for the intake valves, and go through the sequence again at whaterver your final setting on your torque wrench was and re-torque all the head bolts.
Now put everything back on the engine that you just took off and you should be done.

Since I have all the coolant drained out, should I put in a new thermostat? Along with my 7 pound radiator cap?

Yes on the new thermostat and of course use the 7 pound cap. Make sure the new thermostat has a bypass hole. That will eliminate trapped air.

Spray gasket sealant. If anybody has any better Solutions than this substance let me know now. Of course I'd be spraying an actual head gasket 20161115_143309.jpg
