1962 Jeep Willys Build

I went to take it for a test drive and get a picture for all you fine folks. Engine is running a little rough. I pop the hood to look and see what was going on and I noticed gasoline pouring out of the bottom of the carburetor.

so I ordered a carb rebuild kit, a spring plate, and an electronic distributor to replace all of the points/coil stuff I don't care to maintain. will keep you posted.

 

jeepstar, I had the same thing happen to me, even after the carb was rebuilt. Turned out the fuel pressure from the mechanical fuel pump was too high and was preventing the needle valve from staying shut. This would overfill the fuel bowl which would then drain out the bottom of the carb. After researching here, online and the FSM. I found out I did not have the spacer plate between the fuel pump and engine block. Ordered one and installed it and haven't had any more fuel bowl overfill issues. Just wanted to post as a possible cause and correction if rebuilding the carb doesn't resolve your issue.

thank you. its a new to me jeep, so I had the carb rebuild on the list of stuff to do. its just happening sooner rather than later now.

 

Just to check it off the list, make sure your float... floats.

The old brass floats can sometimes crack a solder joint and fill with gas.

 

These items arrived today.

 

All right. My the bumper that once sat 20" above the ground now sits 22.5" from the ground. I can let you know what I think about the suspension after I rebuild my carburetor and take it for a spin.

So are you saying this spacer is needed on which engines? I have the rare 62/63 Buick Fireball V198 V6

 

Installing tomorrow, along with rebuilding the carburetor. I will let ya know. Currently runs like a top, minus the gas leak...hopefully it stays that way

 

Carb is rebuilt. Welded up the wiggly blinker socket that wouldnt ground properly and not blink. Need a ballast resister next, then ill install the electronic distributor. Runs awsome though! And the new lift kit doesnt ride smooth one bit, but its a 100% increase over what was there.

 

If you remove a the second leaf up from the bottom, your ride will improve.

 

If I remember when I was reading about jeep carb's some time ago I believe most carburetor engines benefit from a spacer of some size between the carb base and the intake manifold.

1 reason was it assisted with the vaporization of the fuel going down to the manifold and the other benefit was as a heat barrier considering a lot of them seem to be made from non metallic materials.

I recently saw a hotrod with a spacer under each of it's multiple carby's being around 8 inches long.
But I think that may have been a bit of overkill.

 

I want to replace the body mounts on the cheap. I remember as a kid we would use hockey pucks in the old trucks for body lifts. Is this advisable? Im not 14 living in the backwoods anymore. Im open to better suggestions.

Next question, are the body mounts all the same thickness?

 

4wd hardware sells body mount rubbery you cut to length. I used to use the chop saw ( smelled like Sunday Sunday Sunday) now I use a band saw

 

As for which engines I can't say.​

I have the F134 Engine and the spacer was called out in the parts catalog. My suggestion is to consult your FSM and parts catalog, for your specific engine, to see if it is required for your motor.
