did you use a pickle fork? Shove it in between the tie rod and the mount, then with your BFH, drive it home. It usually pops that sucker out, one whack at a time.

I spent a bit more on mine, they are craftsman, but here's a $11 fix it.

The last time I did tie rod ends on my Volvo I did the two hammer method to try it out even though I have pickle forks. Loosen the nut, BFH on the back side as an anvil and smack the other side with a smaller BFH. It took one blow. Handy way to do it if you want to save the dust boots. Sorry, I should have posted this last night.

My Volvo repair manual actually says to do the two hammer method. I believe the shock of the hammer distorts the casting temporarelly enough to release the Morse taper to allow it to come undone. Actually I did use this method on a Jeep once when I did the king pin bearings. No point in tearing up perfectly good boots.

Have you thought about going with an alternator swap? A 1 wire alternator would be an easy install, and would eliminate some of the electrical uncertainties with the ancient components.

In the case of the speedo cable, make sure the head unit isn't frozen. Mine seized up after some miles and broke the cable.

There is definitely something to be said for making the original equipment work.

I pulled the speedo out of mine. There is a port/hole for some lube oil around the drive. Sometimes it's clogged with crap (mine was) so clean it out. I used some basic lube oil and then I was able to work it loose again with gentle persuasion with vice grips. It works fine now for the last couple thousand miles.
