This is going to be a hopefully short build thread. I really started back in April of this year and this is what I have done so far. It started life down in Mississippi, so no heater. Early 5 with a few parts missing, like everything. Has engine, axles, sheet metal and a title. Here she is when I brought her home last year.

Rumor had it that the motor was a fresh rebuild, but from several years ago. Also rumored to have a axle rebuilt and tranny and transfer case. But like most rumors, I don't believe it till I see it. So.....I pulled the motor out and placed it on the engine stand back in April and wouldn't you know it, rumor was true. Engine is new inside, 40 over, but everything is new, So I pulled the head, checked bore and ridge (none) saw fresh hash marks. Pulled oil pan and it was brand new inside there as well. Pulled main and rod caps, checked clearance, all good to go. Installed new head gaskets, reset push rods, installed new gasket set for entire motor, new water pump, rebuild carb and distributor, bought new head bolts, installed new gas line and vacuum lines, cleaned her up and gave a new coat of paint.

Just got the tub back from the blasters last week. That is a real pain in the butt, because its much worse than I thought, so no pictures of that yet. Good news is, you can see bits and pieces of the rest of the sheet metal behind the engine. Its all blasted, welded and repaired and primed up, just waiting for the tub. I will post pictures of the assembled tub after I get ahead of the sheet metal work. The original hood was blasted, but a little bent and bruised up, so I have to blast the green one in the picture. its a very nice , straight hood, with no rust, but I blast them all. Tranny (T-90) and TC (Dana 18) are looking like they are rebuilt as well and both axles have been done. There was a nice new Powerloc in the rear end. (538 gears) Also has 2 1/2 inch lift springs, but can't tell who's they are, but they are softer.

So that's it, I'm going to post pictures when I get groups of the Jeep done, instead of killing you all with pictures of every nut and bolt. It was nice to see some rumors are true. Hoping to get a big portion of the tub done in the upcoming month.

I'm guessing it lived some of its life somewhere between Mississippi (no heater) and your home (plow??).

Another fanatic Jeep friend of mine, had it in his garage for a few years. Story is he and another guy had passed this jeep back and forth for many a year. One of them had put a plow on it at some point. So it has a history around here and we plan on bringing it back to show the older gent when its done. Trust me, every Jeep around here older than my socks has a plow on it, especially old flat fenders and CJ-5's. I have like 6 plows out back in a pile and a bunch of high lift pumps in the sugar house. So plan is to take my buddy Andy , who I convinced, he needed more room in his garage to finish his flattie, to part with this and surprisingly enough, he agreed. It was the easiest Jeep steal ever. He was actually glad to see the rumors were correct, when I was apologizing for paying so little for it. So that's the back story. I'm hoping to get through this one pretty quickly, seeing as most of the hard work has been done. Not sure if you can tell, but that green on the tub is the original color. It was under the data plate and heater delete plate. Real pretty color when its clean and not rusted.

Don't know if you can tell, but the frame had been cleaned up and re-painted at some point before they lowered the tub back on. Frame is really nice, no rust and straight, but up front, someone had welded a ton of plate on it where that frame thing is mounted for the plow. Not a real head turner, that mount, but heavy duty for sure. But they welded the 1/4 inch plate pretty heavy and had others down the frame rails for support. I decided that I also picked up a M38A1 frame from the same guy and it was going to go under this Jeep as well. So its also getting a nice shiny M38A1 frame under it, once I find a set of hands to help get it in the barn. Then I am going to slowly dissect it and cut away the plates, (when I am done with this build) then weld what ever needs welding (to cover up grinder cuts) repaint it and put it away. Hopefully it will come out perfect, because it really is a nice frame.

Hopefully it will look better at some point. The tub looks good in the pictures, but once the blasters got done, the floors look like swiss cheese. Not the first time, but the replacement panels seem to take forever going it and the spot weld drilling is boring as heck. The good of it is, the wheelwells are good and solid, the rockers only need the bottom 5 inches replaced, the tailgate area is not horrible. The bad, is the entire floor needs to come out, The transmission hump is completely gone, so I have to cut one out of a pretty good tub I was hoping to save, I am not sure if I can save the tool box, but will determine after I get the floor out, the spare tire area is shot (as usual) and I need at least that rear corner and the taillight panel on the right rear. Other than that and a hole lot of time, things ain't so bad. I could not find a tub anywhere near enough to go get, so I am stuck with what I have. If I had a good tub, I think it would be painted and assembled right now and I would be pushing the wiring in time to get to the New Hampshire trail ride with it.

In search of a new tub. This one is gone, not beyond repair, but fiscally non sustaining for this project. I will repair this one over the next few years, but for this project, I'm looking for one with less needs. Anyone have a good one, let me know. Going to NH this weekend to look at one. So, for now, my fast project is in slow motion.

Did manage to find a M38A1 tub this past weekend up in NH. Tub is pretty solid and needing some floor panels, but not bad. Its funny, because I had the like new M38a1 frame and now a tub. Now I have to internet hunt a fuel tank and grill from a A1.
Calling all M38a1 grills and fuel tanks.........................................

Then the little woman brings this home today.
    And a couple of weeks ago, I bought a 67, M-416 trailer.
Seems like God has a plan for this build.
And I have the like new M38a1 frame. :bananatool:
