To be honest, if I did it again, I'd start the title process before doing any work. I was sweating bullets. They really didn't ask any questions but did notice the vin plate had been removed and put back on. They said that they could've crushed the car right then and there if they wanted. They understood why it was removed (paint). I showed them the picture of the jeep when I bought it and the vin tag on the body so I guess it cooled their nerves. Other than that, they took me to a waiting room while they ran everything and 10 minutes later the sheriff came in and handed me the form. Paid my $40 and was out the door. I'm thinking I chose a good day as they were down 5 inspectors and they had 200 some odd cars to inspect.

Then an hour in the DMV to get the rejection letter so I could apply for a bond. Bonds in Texas for any car over 25 years old are $6,000 bonds and you pay $100 for that bond. After I got the bond, you'll spend an hour and a half at the tax office. That's when you pay the taxes which are based on $4,000 car value (blanket value for any car over 25 years old). $310 total at the tax office, I walked out with a temporary title... Should come in the mail in 2-4 weeks.

Sounds like you got very lucky, the process is simaler here but the bond on a Jeep is at least 400 since they use nada to figure value. I’m kicking around going down this road for a 66 with overdrive but title long gone.

I did get lucky. If you're going to do it, get the sheriff inspection before you start turning the wrenches.
