I'm thinking I need to replace the rear main seal on my :v6: I pulled the tranny last night (to fix a leak it has) with a floor jack under the engine oil pan to keep it from just hanging on the motor mounts. Now I'm wondering how do I keep the rear of the engine up while I do the deed on the engine seal? I don't have a cherry picker - but could probably borrow one if need be. Anyone have any useful experiences/suggestions here short of that?

    Thanks.

hows about a strap going through the tranny input and out the clutch fork opening?? it seems a little weak, but you might be forced to do it that way.

edit:: forgot to mention tking it over the cage

That's what I do to pull the trans/x-fer. Makes it much easier - save the weight lifting for the gym ;)

I was thinking the bell housing and flywheel need to be off to do the rear main seal. Maybe not?

    no need to
I see no reason why you couldn't just re-install the trans/t/case then do the rear main, quite honestly
    no repetition of work IMO

i haven't replaced the rear main on the cj yet, but you could be right. i would think that you could loosen the bearing caps and lower the crank a little bit to get clearance around the seal with the flywheel still on. of course, the seal i replaced leaked only slightly less after i replaced it so you should probably wait for someone else should chime in to give you more advice
