I installed the used overdrive I bought off a member here last night in snowshoe. The shift collar doesn't seem to mesh properly with the planetary unit. Looking at this parts breakdown the teeth on 911078 skip by 914232 when it is in direct drive. I know some people have to shim the overdrives. Where do those go and would that solve the issue I'm having?

I believe you need to shim the mainshaft between the overdrive assembly and transmission rear bearing. Are you sure you have all your small parts from any transmission to transfercase adapter?

The transmission is a Ford T18 with a jeep main shaft and rear adapter plate. I did not have any spacers left over. I don't see where any could go either? I put the drive gear back on for now. I still have to make driveshafts and take it for a test run. I'm still swapping the T14 out for the T18.

How thick is the adapter plate? What mainshaft are you using? Novak aa etc.

    hopefully you can see this
    Look near the red line
The planetary hub should only protrude .677 from the face of the transfer case.
Not sure about shifting problems but it will put too much pressure on the needle bearings if not shimmed properly.

These instructions were from a Saturn unit from Advance Adapters

It’s all factory Jeep parts. I have the same parts in my 3a with no issues.

I didn’t measure that before removing the overdrive.

Does the overdrive function in the 3a?

Yes, just fine. I think I'll have to put the OD back in and measure to see how far it is sticking out. .677" is darn close to 5/8", and I don't think it was sticking out that far.

Interesting. Shims aren't going to make it stick out more.

Shims go between transfer case and the face of the OD unit if needed. Right with the gasket.
It's a bit of a PITA to measure how far it sticks out. I managed with a straight edge and calipers.
I only needed a few thousandths. I bought a sheet of shim stock from Mcmaster Carr and cut it out like the gasket.

Shims on the mating surface will make reduce the stick out, shims on the shaft between the transmission and overdrive will increase stick out.

I realize this is a T18 but on the sm465 there is a 1/8" difference in mainshaft length between Novak and AA, one uses a redundant bearing and the other uses a spacer collar on the shaft.

Another thought is physical clearance for the shift linkage.
