I thought I’d throw up a brief thread of my build. I should have started a thread long ago. Definitely not a restoration. It’s a 67 CJ5 F134, T90 Transmission, Dana 18 Transfer Case, 4.27 gears. I bought the jeep as a pile of parts. The engine had been rebuilt recently. I rebuilt the T90 and D18 completely with a Novak kit. My first attempt. I am grateful for all the help and parts I received from the members here. It took me about 5 months to go from parts to a running a jeep (and more money than I will ever admit). I’m still doing the shakedown runs, but it’s finally coming together and I can drive it AND stop it! If I had it to do over again, I’d probably have gone with an 80s vintage CJ5 mainly because this one is a little too small for me at 6’5”. Here is a brief list of some of the things done. I did everything myself—except rebuild the carburetor.

    1. Reproduction steel body (nothing lined up).

    2. Single stage “geyser blue” paint (done in my backyard—not too bad).

    3. Stock steering (new Ross box).

    4. Full floater Dana 44 with Lock right locker-rebuilt.

    5. Dana 27 with Lock right locker -rebuilt.

    6. Rebuilt T90 with Novak kit and all new gears.

    7. Rebuilt D18 with Novak kit (pill removed). Deep oil pan (Novak). Heavy duty skid plate (Brennan’s).

    8. 4-wheel disc brakes (Brennan’s bracket and Geo tracker calipers/rotors)

    9. Gas tank relocated to rear (70s vintage tank).

    10. Painless rewire (really was painless!).

    11. Custom fabricated front and rear bumpers.

    12. M8000S Warn winch.

    13. On board air compressor with tank (Viair).

    14. Super traxion tires (6.50-16).

    15. Full roll cage with shoulder seat belts.

    16. A few choice words occasionally, frustration, almost giving up, loving it, hating it, priceless learning experience!

    Turned out very nice!

Did the rebuilt Carter resolve the issues you were having, and give better performance than the Solex ?

Thank you. Rick hasn’t finished the carb yet. I’ve realized that my expectations for the jeep were too high. Once I learned what to expect, it seems just fine (even with the Solex). The engine runs incredibly smooth with the points distributor. It always starts and runs fantastic. I think I was pushing it too hard and not enjoying each gear for what it is and gives. I take my time and don’t overrev. Third still seems underpowered but it maintains and builds speed with gentle throttle. Previously, I was smashing the throttle to the floor expecting a 4 barrel response (ha ha). I’m more patient now and take what the jeep gives me. This all may sound kooky but it’s true. I’m hopeful the Carter makes things even better. I’d love to get 5.38s but in 4 low she was crawling over obstacles and up steep hills on idle only. I am VERY happy with this!

I also realized I used an older photo of the front with original bumper. Here is the one I fabricated.

Man, that thing is nice. I really like the uncommon shade of blue with the tan wheels and engine. Good work!

Spare in the back looks like a great idea, can you post some pictures of how it's mounted?

You'd really appreciate swapping to an intermediate windshield. Makes a world of difference for tall drivers (6'3" here).

I’m looking into it now. I worry that my front hoop may be in the way and not benefit from the taller windshield. I hate the vacuum wipers and would like to go to electric. What year frame do I need and will my glass fit it or will I need a new glass?

Look for a Late(?)1969-1975 style with the bottom mount wipers, taller glass, and the glass is curved at the top. You'll need new glass. Wiper motor is under the cover on the outside, and the tough part may be finding wiper linkages.

Vintage Jeep Parts say they have the linkage in stock. They don't say anything about the wiper motor or it's cover.
