Swapping a T18 in place of my T15 in a 1974 CJ5. Would like anyone who has done the same please send me specs for the shift bracket/pipe to keep my twin stick dana 20 shifters in the appropriate location. Is it as simple as moving the bracketry forward the 1.18" longer that the new trans is? My t18 is the 79 flavor I was told that one is a little shorter? Thanks all for any help.

The '79 CJ-5 T-18 should be a little shorter than the '71-75 CJ-5 T-18, since the '79 uses no adapter plate.

My suggestion is to measure. When you have all the parts on the shop floor, both the transmission length and the bell housing depth will be changed.

I’m not familiar with the exact transfer case linkage length needed for a 72-75 CJ.
But I do have a D20 shift linkage available that was removed from a J truck.

This should not be difficult for the OP to figure out if he would measure the change in OAL from his original to his new transmission and bell housing. The engine does not move. The shifter does not move. The transfer case moves back by the change in OAL.

You have to assume that he has the parts to measure from, if he is going to swap from his original transmission to the '79 T-18 that he says he will be using.

There is a shifter support for the '76-79 T-18 in a CJ that is part number 5355439. There is also a link from the shifter to the transfer case 999659 that will similarly change in length. Finding another Jeep owner that has these parts and can measure it seems like way more effort and much less certain than simply measuring the change in OAL of the shifter support and link. Then modify the existing parts. Not difficult.

Thanks for your long drawn out awnser that really did nothing for me. I do have all the items necessary to do the measurements you suggested but the jeep is 8 hrs away. I simply wanted something to go by so I could cut my brackets and pipe close to save on space. Thank you though, for nothing.

If you can't lay hands and eyes on the Jeep yourself and wanted a specific measurement from somebody, then you should have said that in the first place.

Generally speaking people on this forum have immediate or close access to their Jeeps, so that is the assumption unless stated otherwise. Since you aren't in that scenario, it's wise to note that information down for the rest of us so we can give you info that's useful to you, instead of being annoyed that someone's (correct, mind you) instructions aren't usable for you because of factors you didn't mention.

Ok, next time I'll try to follow your rules. You don't have the measurement I was asking for so don't feel the need to reply, simple right? Doesn't matter why I need it, or where my jeep is. I asked a question and got the answer I was looking for so move on and have a great day!

Chill out. This the most respectful Jeep forum on the net with the most helpful and knowledgeable members out there. If you don’t want unsolicited answers, then don’t put it out there in the first place.
