In theory, you could use a Corvair 3 or 4 speed manual transmission as a range box on a D18 since the input and output are concentric on the same end. The only problem is that the input shaft is tiny and would probably snap like a twig behind any powerful engine with a granny gear 4 speed in front of the transfercase.

 

That was one problem with the Corvair Crown kits, the inner “input” shaft is long and relatively small diameter. 283 and 327 engines were OK, but 350’s and big blocks snapped them pretty easy. I have the makings for a better mid-engine Corvair, without having the waterpump pulley nearly rubbing your elbow.
