I purchased a CJ5 that was made in Canada with the odd-fire V6, T14 transmission, and Dana 18 transfer case. It is supposed to be a 1968 model. The body is pretty much roached but the reason I got it is for the drivetrain. The engine has a Rochester Quadajet carburetor on a four barrel intake manifold that appears to be original to the engine based upon the paint color and overall patina of the engine. The question I have is did Kaiser offer a four barrel intake on the CJ5? I can’t find any information regarding an OEM four barrel intake for ECJ5. Was this a Canadian option? Any information would be appreciated.

    The serial number is 8305017-247229-0.

I will add photos when I figure out how.

    Thanks,
    Martin

Never heard of a 4V being offered in any markets with the Jeep 225. Buick might have offered it for the 225 or 231, but they had V8s available that would provide increased performance, I'd think.

IIRC there was a 225 marine engine with a smaller-sized Quadrajet. There may be some mention of this in older posts if you search. If it's an iron manifold, it seems certain it's a factory manifold from some application. There should be a 7-digit part number somewhere, cast into the manifold. With that, you could search online for the original application. Not familiar with Rochesters, but I would expect the carburetor should also have a tag or stamped number somewhere.

How do you know it was made in Canada? I thought the Canadian Jeeps had a C in their VINs. You'll need to compare the VIN with the VIN database if you want to confirm the Jeep was made in 1968. There is no year coded in the VIN, but there is a sequential serial number.

I would take a good look at the intake for any aftermarket markings. Someone may have overhauled the motor in a a past life and painted the Offy/Holly/kenney bell aftermarket intake with the proper paint, allowing it to look stock.

BTY: I run a Q jet on my 225. Of all the carbs I've tried (and I've tried them all). I've found it the best fit for offroad and drivability. While one think it would be horribly overcarbed, mine purrs at idle, drives great on the tiny primaries, and nary a bog on the secondaries.

Thanks for your responses. I realize that in 50+ years a lot of changes and modifications could have been done but nothing appears to have been altered except for the removal of the air pump. This is why I posted my question. I have no doubt the intake was changed but I’m relatively new to jeeps in general and the ECJ5s specifically and I don’t know much about factory/dealer options.

As for some of your questions, the firewall has a data plate showing made in Canada and all the data plates have the original rivets. The valve covers are the same as the valve covers on my ‘70 CJ5 225 odd-fire and it has the odd-fire distributor. It has the V6 fender badges, the V6 frame/engine mounts, and the front axle has the torsion bar on the passenger side. The “7” in the id number 8305017 indicates an emissions equipped vehicle and the engine’s heads are the for the air pump injection. Not a marine carb. Lastly the intake is cast iron.

On my initial look I couldn’t find any casting numbers on the manifold. As soon as I can get back to it (too many honey dos right now) I will look closer for a casting number and find the engine build date and assembly data.

    thanks,
    Martin

No differences in how the jeeps were made between the Border, other than emissions required by each.

I was able to have a better look at the intake manifold today. I could only find one set of numbers on the manifold behind the carburetor: “2551223”. There were no other letters, numbers, or markings. I searched the internet for a couple of hours hoping to find some information regarding this manifold but I didn’t find any match to the numbers. It does appear that the three beginning numbers (255) does correspond to Buick cast numbers that begin with 255. I did find one photograph of a 4-barrel Buick 225 V6 manifold that had the same type of water neck mount as mine but a different mounting for the 4-barrel carburetor, it had the numbers 25512236 but did not identify the manufacturer. I will continue to try to figure out how to post photos.

BTW: I noticed I had listed the manifold as cast iron instead of cast aluminum. My brain and typing don’t seem to mesh as well as it used to.

A cast aluminum manifold is undoubtedly aftermarket.

The 1980-1984 Buick 4.1 (252) used a factory aluminum 4bbl intake w/Rochester carb. These were found in Cadillacs, Rivieras, and a couple other rwd big GM cars. The 4.1 is essentially a bored out Buick 3.8.
Some Mercruiser marine engines were based on the Buick 3.8 V6 and many came with 4bbl carbs. Most had iron intakes, but there may be an alloy version too.

If it's a 4.1 manifold, where would one ask about a part number? Cadillac forum? Buick forum? Friendly dealer parts counter? 2551223 seems like a legitimate GM part number.

Are these GM car applications RWD? IF it's the 4.1 manifold, it could either be transplanted to a RWD engine (225, 231?) or be the entire engine. There would be casting numbers on the engine, presumable on the back of the engine at the rear top, behind the intake manifold. We have a V6 identification document somewhere.

Tim, All the 4.1 (252) “Buick” engines were used in both RWD and FWD applications. The FWD cars were Riviera and Toranado that were longitudinal position (as opposed to transverse for most other FWD cars). They were made from 1980 through 1984 and were used in some full-size RWD Buicks and Cadillacs, possibly Olds and Pontiac too?
The casting numbers on these engine blocks are 25505553, 25506484, 25514291, and 25520044, so Martin’s intake part number falls right in the range of the block (and head) castings. I would guess the intake referenced above could be used on later generation 3.8 Buick 3.8/231 engines.
Hey Martin, check the casting numbers on the rear top of the engine block. They can be found usually driver’s side behind the head adjacent to where the bellhousing bolts up. Even if they don’t match the numbers above, I can tell what almost any car/light/medium truck engine is from the casting number.

So, if I'm reading this correctly, one could put a 4-barrel intake from a 252 onto a 225?
The teenager in me is getting excited at the possibility of a 4-barrel carb, even though that's the last thing I need...

Thanks for the detailed reply Donny. I'd be interested to see the OP's response to this info.
I believe Donny is referring to the later Buick 231 rather than the Buick/Jeep 225. Aside from the larger bore, there are some differences which others could better comment on. The 231 can go into a CJ in place of the original 225, but its parts are not 100% interchangeable IIRC.

    Donny,
Thanks for the information, I will check on the block casting number tomorrow but I’m positive the engine is a 225 Dauntless. The valve covers are the 225 style as are the rocker arms. The date code on the passenger side of the block, behind the water pump, shows the letter “N” for 1967 and the letter “K” for “V6-225 7.6 to 1 C.R. (2 Bbl. Carb.).

A further cleaning of the casting numbers on the intake manifold turned up the final number 6 (not exactly in line with the others) making the actual casting number 22412236 which identifies it as a factory Buick 4.1 V6 4-barrel aluminum intake manifold. With this information I found a couple of Buick forums that confirmed that this intake will work on the Dauntless V6; which obviously it does as it is on this Dauntless V6. From what I read there is no modifications needed (I always believe everything I see on the internet, doesn’t everyone ) of course ymmv.

Donny, I looked for the casting number for the engine block but I couldn’t find it. The motor is still in place along with several decades of oil and dirt so this will have to wait until I pull the body off. I’m confident that it is a 1967 Dauntless.
My purpose for acquiring this is for the drivetrain, it’s the same as in my 1970 CJ5. I want to rebuild the ‘70s transfer case and transmission but I’m afraid that if I pull them out it would be years before I get them rebuilt and back together. I now have the transmission and transfer case that I can rebuild while still driving the ‘70. An engine rebuild will have to wait until after the tranny and t/c.

Been reading this thread if the 252 4 barrel intake works on the 225 dauntless then the aftermarket aluminum edelbrock intake should also work which you can buy brand new they are a little pricey but are a really nice intake and you dont have the EGR port. I have one on my 252 in my CJ5. I also have the original 252 4 barrel intake if you want me to take a pic of and post it I can.

I think the port size on the Edelbrock intake is wrong for the 225.
