making great progress... Got carpet out and the padding under was glued in by the Hand Of God... Its out but there is a lot of residue left. Ideas on how to remove the glue without ruining the paint?

What kind of cement is it? Acetone will probably soften it, but I'd try it on a hidden spot first. Should be a 2K acrylic enamel, no clear coat.

I used an angle grinder with a wire wheel (cup). Additional work was needed so it was ok to damage the paint and this removed all the loose rust at the same time.

Thanks all. I am trying to save the paint as for the most part, its in good shape. Not sure if I am going to put carpet back down or try to leave it just bare paint.

My cousin used dry ice to remove the carpet glue and factory sound deadening pads from a couple cars and the paint looked perfect afterwards.

As to carpet or paint, it depends what you do with the jeep. Street only rig that never sees dirt or mud and has a very low chance of water getting in then carpet is a good choice to help with the foor heat and noise. Bare paint is easy to clean and hose out when it gets really dirty from offroading it. Ive had my jeep in muddy water do deep it was touching the bottom of my seat. A quick spray down at the car wash back in town was all the clean up needed. The con of painted floors is with out floor mats your shoes will scratch the paint and you risk rubbing the paint down from using the pedals. Mine has a couple bare metal spots from were my boots pivot for the pedals.

Noise will be a lot lower with carpets. When I had my '73, I had the official snap-in carpet kit on the floor. Gray short-nap indoor-outdoor carpet with bound edges, sold as a Jeep-approved dealer installed accessory. Installed on snaps that screwed-in to the floor steel. NLA AFAIK. I put two layers of jute carpet underlayment under the carpet. Much quieter, and nice on bare feet or sandals.

The snaps gave the impression you could remove the carpets, but it was trapped under the seat brackets and was not easily removable. Today I think I would use velcro patches at the corners, and glue the mating velcro down with emblem tape.

I'm not sure I am either Tim, but clearly it won't be as bad as wet carpet and give some sound deadening.... Still thinking we will go with carpet

A few decades ago we were trying to remove carpet glued down to a concrete floor in a showroom. We tried every solvent we could find including 3M adhesive remover, acetone, mineral spirits, blah, blah. No luck. Then came a serious rainstorm and the leakage under the overhead door dissolved the glue! I'm not saying any ole water would have worked, but rainwater sure did.

    Who would have thought that?
    Worth a try.
