I bought this on an auction this week:

It’s a Craftsman (Atlas?) 101.07400 metal lathe. It came with a bunch of accessories and cutting tools - both High Speed Steel and carbide. And, fortunately for me, the operator’s manual.

My dad was a very skilled toolmaker with turning, milling, grinding and welding skills. He was employed as a tool-room machinist for many years. He died in 2013, at 87, so he’s not here to help me learn.

    :(

    Very Nice.
Would love to have an Atlas lathe.
Those small metal lathes are sought after.
I enjoyed the night classes I took in machining at the Community College. Maybe see if you can take some classes in your area. They are really fun to play with. Kind of addictive.

It may not be the Atlas model, as there’s no marking designation of that. Regardless, it’s still a desirable tool. The hand cranks, though, are pot-metal, and fragile (as in, broken or breaking). The first order of business is to either purchase or manufacture some steel cranks.

Among the attachments is a milling vise! I can turn a shaft, then cut a keyway in it! Woot!

I chucked up a cheesy carriage bolt and cut the head down to the shank diameter. Then turned it around and cut off the threads, just for entertainment.

    This thing is cool!

I love old machines, I was trained on machining equipment in 77(navy). I'm working on picking up a lathe, haven't seen it yet. Ron
