I am assembling a basket case 1967 CJ5 with F134 engine and I’ve never worked on one before. I installed new exhaust manifold studs and was getting ready to install the manifold when I noticed that two studs do nothing. Specifically, the studs toward the outside ports (inner/lower) stud. Is this a remnant of the L head? Should these studs be removed? Am I missing a piece?

My F head has 5 studs, 3 in the middle and one on each end. I replaced all five studs.

Here is pic of my ‘58 from when I pulled it for rebuild years back. If they don’t help, I can go get better pics.

Perfect! Thank you very much. I wonder why those holes are there and not used? Anyway, I now have an answer! What is the doohickey below on the left bolt of the valve panel?

The F-Head block, as you know, was developed off the same block used on the L-Head which had paired Intake/Exhaust manifolds. I expect those extra stud holes are carry overs from that.

The "doohickey" on the valve cover is the PCV valve and it's connection to the valve cover. There were three or four different configurations used for the PCV system, my F-Head has the valve up on the intake manifold of the head, but it serves the same purpose no matter where the valve is located in the system.

Thank you for the explanation on the block holes. My PVC is also on the intake manifold.

PCV = Positive Crankcase Ventilation while PVC is plastic plumbing pipe :coffee:

I made the same typo in my explanation, so just ribbing you some, which I have just corrected for anyone else reading this thread later on.

Ha ha. I didn’t catch that. I guess I have plumbing on my mind. Yes, PCV.
