Ive been working on a few odds and ends while I'm waiting for brake parts to show up.
Walked out today to find coolant on the floor. A little flashlight shining around revealed a leaky water pump.
Not really a big deal, the new serpentine drive setup requires a new reverse rotation water pump anyway.

Enough parts have shown up that its time to start turning wrenches!
The brake booster/master cylinder combo are mounted in between the factory frame and the 2"x4" box tube chassis.
The access panel to fill the master cylinder is located under the drivers seat. Between the tiny allen head screws on the master cylinder, the half visible access hole, tacky a** plastic remote add on reservoir and the sub 1" clearance between the master cylinder lid and floorboard....... its all a bunch of BS..... :poo:
It's time to do this job right!

    The old.......

The new hydro boost unit with remote reservoir master cylinder. The new master cylinder is 1-1/8" with an fittings to run up to the remote reservoir.

The hydro boost needs to be calibrated to your specific purpose, I read. Is that true?

it would be a fantastic upgrade for CJs with through the floor pedals.

New unit in place for mock up.
I am waiting on hose fittings and steel braid PTFE hose.
The remote reservoir is getting a divider and AN bungs welded into it.

Shipping delays limited progress over the weekend.
I wasn't a big fan of the low pressure return hose barb on the hydroboost unit. After a bit of research I found the correct fitting to go from straight threads to -6AN.
The fitting came in on Saturday, sadly this was the only progress.

Made a bunch of progress on the hydroboost over the weekend.
I'm waiting on a couple of fittings to button up all of the plumbing for the system.
Mocked up the new brake reservoir and made both lines. Tonight's project will be mounting the reservoir and bleeding the brakes!

I'm hoping to button up the hydroboost portion of this project this evening, maybe sneak in a little test drive too!
March Performance is coming up pretty lame on their delivery time for the serpentine system. That's a whole other story......
Unfortunately they are the only mfr that offers a placement solution that works within my requirements.
Hydroboost lines are run, just waiting on 2 fittings to make the final connections.
The hydroboost uses 3 lines: high pressure from PS pump, high pressure from HB to steering rack, low pressure bleed/return. The bleed/return splits off and tees into the return hose from the steering rack.

Brake fluid reservoir is mounted and line are run. I tightened the hoses 3 times...... fingers crossed that it doesn't leak!
I'll be keeping a very close eye on the brake components for leaks!
Just noticed how dirty that valve cover is...... :rofl:The whole car is pretty dirty actually.

Buttoned up the hydroboost install over the weekend.
I am still waiting on the serpentine drive system to show up before I tear the car down for EFI install.
The Hydroboost unit ended up getting lowered down 3/4" as the clearance to the floorboard was making it nearly impossible to get wrenches up there to tighten the fittings.

It's a mess of hoses plumbing this system. The pump pressure outlet hose needed a compact full flow 90 degree fitting to clear the rack fittings.

After a few more adel clamps and zip ties, the system was ready to fill and bleed........
Bleeding hydroboost procedure goes as follows:
Wheels in the air, turn steering lock to lock 5 times.
    Pump brake pedal 4 times.
Turn steering lock to lock 5 times.
    Pump brake pedal 4 times.
    Repeat 40X.........
After swearing...... bleeding.... swearing...... air bubble blowing PS fluid everywhere....... finally the system was ready to test drive.
The brakes are now pretty darn good. But I had my suspicions about the health of the PS pump when I drained the old fluid from the system. The old fluid smelled burnt and had a decent liquid metal look to it. I cleaned out the reservoir really well before reinstalling it, but the 5 bottles of royal purple PS fluid eventually became dark and took on a little metallic sheen........
Hopefully this pump lives until the serpentine system is installed.
In the meantime I have a new PS pump on order from Detroit Speed. The new pump is specifically valved for the higher pressure required by the hydroboost but has a lower flow control valve to keep the rack and pinion steering happy.
I have a suspicion that the current PS pump in the car is low pressure/low flow.... as most bolt on pumps are valved when using with rack and pinion.
The new pump should improve both braking and steering.

I put 50 or so miles on the car between Saturday/Sunday and gave it a bath before dropping it off with my mom. She is thrilled with how well the new brake system works!
I forgot how much fun this car it to drive. It handles like a race car, has just enough HP to make you grin as you throw it around, AC system freezes you out and 4 adults can ride comfortably. I really miss the feel of driving a 4 link car with a panhard bar in the rear. There's just something about how the rear end tracks in a corner that makes you want to throttle out as hard as possible.
Working on this car makes me want to dive into the AMX project.
