I'm adding a locker and rebuilding my dana 27. Trying to find new axle u joints while I'm in there. Are there any ideas on a part number?

There are several options listed on Rockauto under drivetrain\universal joints. They are listed along with the drive shaft u-joints.

Do your ujoints on the axle shafts seem bad?

They are not terrible but would prefer to change now when all apart. I wheel it pretty hard and don't need it breaking in woods

Bubble popper: D27's and D25's will break in the woods no matter what U-joint you use. In my experience, the axle shafts and spiders break before the U-joints.

I often read of how weak these axles are, yet there are a great number of very old Jeeps with them which have been rode hard for many years.

I 'don't reckon we have the kind of terrain around here that one might encounter in Montana, and I have never done any real hard trails or rock crawling, but I have driven old Jeeps way back into the backwoods of East TN. I have yet to break an axle, or blow out the gears in a Jeep.

The only time I had an axle failure was when I drove a Ford F150 one some fairly rough logging roads in the backwoods of the Prentice Cooper State Forest, and in that case it was the ring gear that failed. That was a Ford truck rear end which I would consider a stronger axle than a Dana 25/27, albeit a heavier vehicle.

I've only broke dana 27 spiders jerking a giant bush out, in reverse.
