Need help to decode this VIN tag on a Canadian cj5 jeep for a friend. Never seen a VIN tag like it. The jeep is registered as a 1966, and it has Tuxedo Park bumpers and hood on it ( I believe those parts were added to a regular cj5 as there no prefix for the Tux model) It has a 134 F-head engine. Thanks guys!

I’ve never seen this tag before. Jeep built CJs and Wagoneers in Windsor from the early ‘60s into ‘69. I’ve seen several, and they have the normal “8305” prefix followed by either “C16” or “C17”, then the serial number (I have most of a ‘68 Windsor-built M38a1). Supposedly, the “C” denotes Canadian built. The image you posted shows “10C”, so maybe the C denotes a Canadian version? Since the “8305” prefix was introduced for the ‘64 model year, could this Jeep be earlier?
There may be more knowledible folks on this topic over on the CJ3B forum.
For what its worth, photos of mid-‘60s Windsor Jeeps have what appear to be the curved Tux bumpers in period newspaper articles.

Thanks Donny! I too have never seen this type of VIN tag. I wonder if it was retitled, and a new tag made? My friend is trying to buy it, and I told him I would try to find out more info before he gets it. The seller says it’s a Tuxedo Park.

Here’s a pic he sent me. The color was originally red, so maybe it is a Mark III ?
Windshield and parking lights definitely not correct for a Mark III though….

Those look like Tux MKlV badges on the hood. Those would have the 8322 prefix, plus, I don’t think Windsor ever built a Tux.
Does the dash have a cutout for the column shift?

I wonder if this could be a CJ-5 that was originally manufactured for the Canadian military, which might be the reason for the strange serial number?

If so, the Tux hood and front bumper were likely added by a later civilian owner, and perhaps the 1969-71 style windshield as well.

Maury, The Windsor factory actually did build a batch of about 800 M38a1’s around ‘68/‘69, so I doubt they had a parallel militarized version of a CJ. Mine is one of those. I’m not home now, but if I remember, there was nothing unusual (like post#1 here) about my Jeeps serial number plate.
I’ve done a bit of digging on the Windsor-built Jeeps because of the one I have, and some of the info posted out there shows photos of mid/late’60s Canadian CJs having a curved front bumper like used on the Tuxes and very early R1’s. It really hard to determine what may be original in the photo in post #4, but we know the ‘69-up windshield frame wasn’t used on mid-60s CJs. Maybe this Jeep is actually a ‘69 (even with the small amber signal lights)?

Donny, that makes a lot of sense. Maybe it is actually a '69 - which was the last year that the Windsor plant was in operation, correct?

If it is a '69, then some or all of the front sheet metal was replaced with that from an earlier Tux. The seats look like they’re from an earlier CJ too, like maybe a '66-'67.

Another possibility that could explain the odd VIN number is that this Jeep may have been originally manufactured for the Canadian equivalent of the Forestry Service, or some other governmental organization that required a particular serial number format.

I wonder if there's a Canadian CJ forum that might have some information about that?

Are there vin numbers on the frame somewhere that could possibly be used to cross reference or confirm what’s on the tag?

Now that we may have an explanation for Beach66Bum’s enquiry on the “10 C” prefix as a Perkins diesel originally, I’ll try another question regarding Canadian vin tags.
I have never seen the prefix I have for a 1968 Canadian M38a1. I posted up the question back in March, 2020, but never found an answer. My Jeep has the typical 5 tag military placard plate that mounts on the dash (lower right corner tag) listing it as “M38a1CDN2” and “Mfd. by Kaiser Jeep of Canada LTD, Windsor, Ontario”. The serial number and date (Jan 68) are also stamped on this tag. OK, all this makes perfect sense.
Now the puzzling part I’ve never figured out. There is also a familiar firewall tag (on the engine compartment firewall) with the serial number embossed “7105 969xx C”, with the lower portion embossed “Kaiser Jeep Corporation”, “Toledo, Ohio”, the same as all the mid/late ‘60s CJs. The “C” at the end of the serial number is stamped, not embossed like the rest of the characters (for “Canada”?). Both the serial numbers match on the both tags.
Does anyone have any idea what the “71” prefix denotes?Any Canadian Jeep experts out there?

Thanks Dave! Your link above explains my question. 7105 denotes an MD, aka M38a1. Those photos of the tags are exactly the same as I described in my question.
