Before I pull the floor does the T14 have its own vent or does it vent via the transfer case. I don’t see one in the FSM. And it shares fluid with the tcase so I figured it shares. Thanks

Pulled the vent off the tcase. It wasn’t passing air well. Disassembled it and it had copper wool in between the two plates. Is this the normal filter material or did someone get creative? I used a circle of Scotch bright which pass air much better. I am just curious what was supposed to be there

There is no dedicated vent in the transmission that I recall. The shifter stalk is not sealed and will pass air. The transfer case and transmission will drain oil if upside down for long.

Likely your transfer case vent is original. Oil breathers for engines sometimes contain copper wool, and similar construction would not be surprising.

I get some oil coming out through the shift cone/stick. Anyone else experience this? I’ve checked oil level in both Transfer case and transmission and both are normal levels. The vent appears to be unobstructed as well.

    Here's a T-14 shift top.

There's no seal or baffle or whatever. However, the spring is supposed to hold the ball tightly in the socket, and that would block any splash from the transmission. Possible the spring is broken. The oil splash is a deluge inside the transmission, and if there's any gap, I would expect something to be thrown out. Possible other parts are worn out too. Or it could be over-filled, I presume.

Lack of replies suggests it's not a common problem.

Thanks for posting this. Anyone know if I can purchase a spring?

There exists - or used to exist - a shift top parts kit for the T-18. Maybe also for the T-14 or T-15. I bought my T-18 shift top parts kit online, but Parts Mike also has it. You could try Herm www.hermtheoverdriveguy.com and see if he has a source for shift top parts. Maybe others will have suggestions.

The T-14 is present in the J-series parts book on the Tom Collins site. You can look up the part numbers for these parts, though I'm skeptical you will find them that way. The pic above comes from there. Likely there was a kit available from Jeep too.

According to my parts book, the part number for that spring on a T14 3 speed is 642 763
