This isn't the 1st kink I've worked on in my '57 CJ-5, but it is the current one - it had a bit of water in the tranny...:rolleyes: and in the transfer case...:)

I think it is pretty safe to assume that you will find what you did in any Jeep parked outside without a hard top. Unless you perhaps live in the Atacama.

It's actually cleaning up pretty good. My '59 Farmall Cub's tranny looked far worse and its running like a champ now. A little kerosene can work wonders.

I’d tear it down and really evaluate it. Those are easy to work on. I’d bet the bearings and at least some of the gears are not good.

X2! It would take a miracle for the bearings and races to not be pitted.

10-4 - It'll be a while until I can give it a test drive, but I'll check it then. Thanks all for the comments.

Running the gears will probably be OK, I too would be worried about the input/mainshaft bearings. Perhaps the pocket and countershaft needles as well.

Not initially. Just trying to get it up and running as the PO left it uncovered in his yard for 6+ years (hence the rust in the tranny, I guess). It won't go on the public highway for at least several months. BTW, I dropped the oil pan on the TC yesterday and the gears there look very good - there was some oil in there, along with some water.

I've seen bad on here but that is likely the worse. I'd run it and see what happens. You can clean up the worst of it with a brush and any lube or Diesel fuel. Cycle in clean oil after an hour.

You would be wise to pull the transmission at this stage of the game rather than later on wishing you had done it previously.

I'll post more pics and results as I can on this thread, but for now - summer, the pool, and grandkids are eating up my wrenching time. I'm like the window washer on the Empire State Building - I just wash one window at a time - eventually I get 'em all done...then I start over. :)
