    So I dropped the transmission because it would not shift into 3rd gear. Did not grind just would not go so figured syncro. The tranny has an OD. And I am really new to this stuff so I realy do not want to remove the OD to split the trany from the transfer case. Is that doable or do I have to remove the OD to split the tranny from the transfer case?

    Yes, the OD will have to be removed and the big bowl gear for the OD will have a nut and lock ring that is 1/2 in drive inside the rear of it. Remove the bowl gear then the cases can be separated.

    Might double check the lid to insure your problem isn't a shift detent/fork issue. Will the fork go into the 3rd position? Wear on the fork face? Broken roll pin?

    Try shifting into 3rd with the lid off. Does the collar slide? Syncro's failing to line up? Is there another issue there?
