    I don't know which is worse. Them saying they would have to replace the chain, or them saying they are hard to find. The first demonstrates ignorance of the unit, the second implies they aren't above lying to make it sound like they know something they don't. This is the sort of shop that will take advantage of people that don't know any better.

    If the transfer case is working okay I would just replace the rear output seal and go on with it.

    If you do decide to replace the output seal, while you have it apart would be a great time to service the parking brake. I expect the shoes have been saturated with gear oil.

    Wow! That’s an incredible offer! I’ll take you up on that. I want to learn to do this so I won’t ask you to do any of the work. I’ll definitely need advice on how to do some things though if that’s ok.

    it will have to be after Easter but I’ll PM you to arrange a convenient time for you. Im still working so it will most likely need to be on a Friday or Saturday if that works.

    in the mean time , can you tell me what tools I will need to bring to get it separated?

    the parking brake operates but just doesn’t hold. So I’m guessing you’re right in saying it’s saturated with oil.

    The very first job I had to do on my '67 was the transfer case. I bought it, hopped in and drove 100 miles across western Nevada, until the low-on-oil dana 18 let go. It was a learning experience for me at age 23, 37 years ago. Before internet, but I had some good advisors, and you have all of us. I say go for it.

    Just need a wrench, a socket, and a big screwdriver.

    Bring your toolbox, if you don't have what you need it will be good to find that out, and I am sure I will be able to come up with something. I just tore down a Jeep I am parting out, you can have the TC from that one since it is easy to get at.

    Yeah, you can bet with gear oil leaking out the seal the brake shoes are soaked, but they don't cost much.

    I am retired, so with a few days notice we can probably set up a day that will work.

    There isn't much that can go wrong, don't be scared to tear into it. The best thing about jeeps is that they're simple and logical. It's really hard to get yourself into trouble....it comes apart easily and goes together a certain way. Just follow the TSM.

    I learned to work on cars when I was young, and couldn't afford to pay someone else to fix something if it broke. If I didn't know how to do something, I had to learn how to do it or go without. I always figured that if somebody else was able to do it, I was smart enough to learn how to do it.

    My life motto has been "Never let ignorance stop me". The first engine I overhauled was when my old Chevy blew up on a Friday, and I had to fix it to have a way into work the next Monday.

    Ignorance is just a lack of knowledge, and that can always be cured.

    I spent 45 years in IT at a big corporation. The first 25 years were in "Operations". Due to a merger in 2000 they shut down our computer center and my job was eliminated, along with the jobs of about 30 other people. I wrangled a job as a programmer without ever having seen a single line of code. I just learned it on the fly. I taught myself COBOL, C, C#, various forms of SQL, and other languages. I was entirely surprised at how easy the stuff was to understand. I spent 20 more years writing code, and became known for my expertise in tuning program performance. To me it was the same mindset as with tuning engines, being able to visualize what is going on.

    I bring this up because it was that same "Never Let Ignorance Stop Me" that got me through in my career. Never tell yourself you can't do something, and with all the information out there today, you could probably learn how to do brain surgery from a Youtube video.

    Dale, you'll find lots of help and shared knowledge on this site. No one will shame or flame you for asking questions and asking for help. A great member here walked me through my first transmission and transfer case rebuild and I asked a lot of newby questions (and some pretty dumb ones) but, he assured me that it was fine with one simple sentence. "You don't know what you don't know." No shame. And very generous sharing of first hand experience and expertise. Thank you Nick. Forever indebted.

    Oldpappy has also made a very generous offer. This is the type of thing, the type of people, the mindset that I believe makes our hobby and this site so great. There is a lot of it here. Accept it and try to return it with whatever knowledge you can share on whatever topic someone may have questions about in any of the forums here.

    Be careful separating the TC from the transmission. That tinkling sound is about 10,000 needle bearings falling out. Ask me how I know.

    I've heard that same sound !

    Not too worried about dumping bearings with this transmission, we should be able to avoid that, but won't matter much if it happens as it needs to be rebuilt anyway.

    Luckily the original poster's 70 V6 would have a large hole transfercase. You don't need to remove the bull gear to pull the transfercase off so you don't have to worry about the transmission coming apart and loosing it's rollers.

    Absolutely no benefit of the doubt applies here!!!!

    I'm not sure what specific D18's Oldpappy has available but a stock 70 will have the large index case as Fireball noted. That case is, IMO, quite a bit stronger than the small index cases and is the same as used on some of the D20's. There is also three versions of the small index D18. You will not likely run into the 3/4" intermediate shaft version used in the WWII Jeeps and early CJ2A's but they are best avoided for this as they only have a 2:1 low range. The 1 1/8" and 1 1/4" intermediate shaft versions have low ranges of 2.43:1 and 2.46:1 but the 1 1/4" is the strongest and has the same gearing as the large index case. If this was my Jeep, I would be just replacing the rear seal and e-brake shoes-absolutely no need to dig into the rest of it unless something else is amiss.

    Joe DeYoung makes a nifty seal puller but you can get them out with either a lever type puller or a Visegrip. Joe's really works well.

    The re-seal still might need the shim pack sealed as well as the splines of the output shaft. I usually use a light coat of copper spray-a-gasket on each shim. Usually you don’t need to mess with resetting the endplay as long as all the original shims are kept.

    I'm currently going through the videos and links referenced in this thread. I went to the Technical Index and found the links to the Dana 18.
