I am getting ready to replace my tubes and tires on my 16" steel wheels... original style.

I was looking at adding the valve stem protectors... which mount on the outside of the rim. At $10 each... wow!

Any thoughts? Are they really worth it?

    Thanks!

You talking about the military style shields?

    Only $4 each here
    https://www.ebay.com/itm/294233134451?hash=item4481a95573:g:B6wAAOSwv5RdZFFC

There were some that came on my M38A1, but I can't decide if they would help anything. I suppose on a deflated or very low pressure inner tube, they might keep the valve from being pulled inside the rim. (?)

But in my personal 50 years of jeeping, my tire valves have never demonstrated a need for protection.

Yep. I've never had an issue with valve stems in 60 something years. Not saying that it couldn't happen but it is highly unlikely. If you are running tubeless tires, just get the heavy duty stems that have a nut to lock them to the rim.

Actually the proper term is not valve stem protector, it is tire mounting sleeve.
They were used to keep the stem on the tube from falling back into the wheel during the mount and inflate process.

Yes, metal stems if you are running tubeless tires. Plus I've never seen any stems been damaged by 4-wheeling. Maybe, but they are well protected and not delicate.

I run short rubber stems. If you get into a rock field a rubber stem can bend. Steel can snap off. Carry an extra no matter that stem you are running.

More a hazard of rim-slippage with inner tubes aired-down, I think.
