Trust me. Every engine from every era has been tried in a Jeep.
Just because you've never seen one up close, doesn't mean somebody didn't have it.
The only exception, and I'm going out on a limb here, would be IH 4cyl and V8 engines.
I've never even heard of anyone attempting that quagmire.

I actually had one in my garage until last summer and did think about that same exact thing. It could be done, but I'm not sure it would have been worth the battle.

It wasn't an uncommon swap back in the day. A guy in my parents' Jeep club had one in a flatfender back in the 70s.

I'd grab that just to have a pre-smog engine. I'd find a use for it eventually.

I keep looking at my parts 345 V8 in the backyard and wondering what it would be like in a CJ.
The thing is just so heavy though, too heavy.

I almost put it in my 68 Cougar just to mess with people.

    Okay.
So the only two left on my list are the Yugo and Wankel.
Who knows of a Jeep guy with either one on those installed ?

Yup, used to race a guy with a 13b in a 5. I was so impressed with it, I bought an RX7 to rebuild the 3b around, but life happened and it never progressed.

Come to think of it, that engine might still be at my dad’s.

That might solve your length problem so you can use a truck 4spd and a 203/205 doubler. It's a short motor.

Had a 68 mustang with that 200cu motor, 3 speed. used it as a commuter car for 10 years.
Absolutely good motor, ran so smooth and quiet could hardly hear it run at idle, simple to work on and maintain. Drove it like trying to float the valves every time I pulled away from a traffic light. 21 MPG every tank just running about town. and would get 26mpg every time cruising at 70 mph on the interstate. finally sold it with 150k miles on it, still ran fine and used no oil.
Too bad they are really not suited for a jeep/just too long. Would work in an intermediate probably, but why, a factory 232 is about the same. Only advantage to one, probably would get a little better mpg, maybe. Tougher than the amc 232/258 ??

They will fit in an early CJ or Flatfender if you are willing to cut the firewall.

I also used to race a guy that had a Wankel in a race Jeep. Can’t remember if a CJ-5 or a Flatfender. I do remember that he would shut it down and then a couple minutes later the fuel vapors that gathered in the exhaust would ignite and explode. Would scare hell out of people lol

Not exactly a crawler though. :D You’d need 300:1 CR to utilize its power band.
