I ended up ordering a new timing cover to replace my cracked on. The new cover uses a new style rubber seal for the harmonic balancer group. i was cleaning up the harmonic balancer and flange and noticed the seal area that will contact the new seal has a rough part that has the texture if the original rope seal. What do i need to do use this harmonic balancer/pully unit to work with the new seal. speedi sleeve? Sand down the rough part on the flange? Get a new flange if available?

Iirc the seal rides inboard on the smooth surface. The ridges are actually there to whip/ shed the oil away from the seal.

The original rope seal rides on the flat area to the left (in your photo) of the knurled area. I would take crocus cloth and polish that surface. The neoprene lip seal is a big improvement. As mentioned, the knurls pull the oil away from the seal with the engine running.
