Yup, one of those days I just could not get things dialed in right, booger balls drop'n & pop'n all over the place. :( I was actually working from the outside filling a gap when I hear a POP- Poppoppoppoppoppop...

Must have been a Big Hot one but I can't explain the english or the bank shot off the floor rib

    Update *NOW WITH MULTIMEDIA!*

Last weekend I continued on with the sides doing a little final tweaking and starting the body fill to cover up the various remnants of the patching & minor dent hiding.

Imagine my feelings when this weekend I found the last coat hadn't hardened up properly- very soft. :( I tried cleaning it off with the sander but it was gumming up the paper too darned fast to get anywhere. Reluctantly I decided to engage a hand grinder with a wire cup dreading what kind of shape it would leave the good fill in.

Imagine my feelings when, after going at it with the grinder and a light pass with the palm sander the good fill looks great. o_O Hardly added any trouble spots at all :)

One of the things that was kicking around in the back of my head has been to add stake pockets. Somehow the idea bit me this week and I just went at it :)

After a number of issues with the air compressor, blast media and blaster itself spread out over literally months I finally reached the point I can move ahead with the wheel restoral.

    Original-

After months of on again / off again work-

    Trailer Rebuild_wheel cleanup_6.jpg

I really seriously question on my sanity for using these but-

They're best ones I got in the goodies pile
    They're going on a trailer

So it's a Battle to the Finish- the chosen weapon is Metal Reinforced Body Fill.

First a couple of coats of POR applied under the right conditions at the right time, translation-

    Boring. :(

I did take the opportunity to hit a a few of the other odds & ends requiring attention.

    Trailer Rebuild_wheel cleanup_8.jpg

Many hours later time is optimal for the rattle can spray primer which is the official go ahead for the fireworks display saying it's time to go home for the day :bananatool::bananatool:

    [IMG]o

The next day begins with the

    Fill

    Sand

    Repeat

    And then repeat again :)

    Trailer Rebuild_wheel cleanup_9.jpg

    Trailer Rebuild_wheel cleanup_10.jpg

Note how well the POR is surviving the process & how well the cheap primer is bonded to the por.

    Trailer Rebuild_wheel cleanup_11.jpg

They look spotty but they're smooth. I'll POR them again both inside & out to seal them up good & then top coat with 2K primer & paint.

    More next ... - whenever.

Hey there, it's been a while.

How are you all doing? Been keeping busy? Enjoying the summer? :)

I've been busy with a bunch of different stuff but have still been plugging away. I've learned one of two things on this project, either-

    a) this is way more work than I imagined
    or

    b) I'm just not a fast worker :(

So last time (was it really that long ago? o_O) I was working on the wheels. I'm glad to report they finally got done :)

I hit them up with another coat of POR15 just to seal them up nicely & applied primer-

    trailer Rebuild_wheelpaint_3.jpg

    trailer Rebuild_wheelpaint_2.jpg

    trailer Rebuild_wheelpaint_5.jpg

    trailer Rebuild_wheelpaint_4.jpg

After paint- they came out acceptably good.

When viewed from a distance. :)

Next up the tailgate. This thing was a major PITA. To be fair it's seen a lot of abuse for something that is essentially just a piece of sheet metal chopped out of the tub. It had some nasty bulges in it that just were not responding to tapping or shrinking so I figured I'd try making relief cuts & welding them up.

    trailer rebuild_tailgate_2.jpg

    trailer rebuild_tailgate_3.jpg

    trailer rebuild_tailgate_1.jpg

What a nightmare :( Every time I welded up the cuts new bulges would mysteriously form 4-6 inches away, necessitating more cuts, more welding, more bulges. :steamed: I think I went through it about four times before I got it reasonably flat, there's about four days of work in those three pics.

    !Finally! the paint :)

Re-POR'd the floor, because, you know, I POR everything as many times as I can.

    trailer_rebuild_paint_2.jpg

    It's not that I like POR15 (although I do), it's just that I hate rust :(

    2K primer-

    trailer_rebuild_paint_1.jpg

    And the first colour coat!

    It sucked !!

    trailer_rebuild_paint_6.jpg

    trailer_rebuild_paint_4.jpg

It doesn't look that bad in the pics but paint always looks better in photos.

I thought I was going to be smart & save some money by using marine paint- got half the advertised coverage, i.e. only one coat instead of the two I should have had. :steamed:
    It was thin.
    It was runny.
    It ran.
    It was too flat.

It was replaced with real paint.

    trailer_rebuild_paint_7.jpg

Same stuff I used on Tonk, so I'm have some experience with applying it.

Well it still took me three more tries to get it right (oddly enough the same as when I did Tonk ), entirely my fault for-

    a) using a cheap worn out gun

    and

    b) screwing with the adjustments on the better gun in the middle of the job.

Still eventually I got there -

    trailer_rebuild_paint_9.jpg

    trailer_rebuild_paint_8.jpg

I feel like I've actually accomplished something tangible- we're on the home stretch :)

    Almost ...

Bed liner. I was not into the idea of a DIY liner job but some of you helpful folks informed me about Raptor kits so I decided to give it a whirl.

All masked & ready to start :)

    trailer Rebuild_Raptor_1.jpg

    Components of the kit-

    trailer Rebuild_Raptor_2.jpg

    trailer Rebuild_Raptor_3.jpg

    First coat

    trailer Rebuild_Raptor_4.jpg

    Done :)

    trailer Rebuild_Raptor_6.jpg

    Ain't that Purdy?

I'm very pleased with the outcome :)

There was enough in the kit for four coats; I moved the masking tape up about 1/8" for each one to blend the lines a bit, worked out well.

There were some boo-boos- applying the first coat it inexplicably started spraying non-lumpy coating, very runny; I expect I didn't mix it well enough. On the following coats it went better, still a few areas where I let the gun got too close or held it in one spot for too long but after all the coats mostly it all evened out to a uniform surface.

    trailer Rebuild_Raptor_5.jpg

It's been on there about five days now so still hardening up but so far it looks like I'll have a nice rubbery surface. (y)

    Next- Re-assembly :D

    Progress continues :)

The suspension is once again one :)

    trailer_reassembly_paint_1.jpg

Tailgate fitted; due to the tub supports being bolted to the rear crossmember I need to add 3/16" spacers to the hinges othewrise it won't close :(

    trailer_reassembly_paint_2.jpg

Moving into the electrical. I know I'm on record as being against soldering automotive connections & still am for some very good reasons however in this case there wasn't much of an option. You can be sure they're completely sealed from moisture & strain relief is in place.

    trailer_rebuild_electrical_paint_2.jpg

    Harness completed-

    trailer_rebuild_electrical_paint_3.jpg

    trailer_rebuild_electrical_paint_4.jpg

    And installation started-

    trailer_rebuild_electrical_paint_5.jpg

Working now on connecting all the lights.

    On the home stretch :)

Finished up the wiring; the tail/stop lights I selected are designed to fit into a protected area, obviously not the case here so I fabbed weather shields for them

    trailer_rebuild_electrical_37.jpg

    And tested-

    She's Officially a Roller :D

Still a few little items to take care of before license & inspection, like remembering where I hid the license plate, but the end is near. :)

Looks great, really nice job. My question is, when you sectioned the axle, did you notice if it had any caster? I previously cut and re-welded one and have noticed some wandering at 25 mph or so.

No, I have on other trailers noticed that either the axles were bent down in the middle from either hitting too many pot holes or they came that way to add some camber but as far as I can tell this one was dead straight- no camber, no toe in & , even though I can't imagine how you could do it anyhow, no caster.

You should be able to check your camber & toe in with a tape measure, Good Luck.
