Swapping in a 1980 Buick 231. The brake MC prevents the PS pump from adjusting up enough to get belt tight. I’d never get the cap off either :n:

I have a low mount for the pump but that doesn’t fit with the Herm kit PS gear right below there in the engine compartment

On my Dauntless I could space the pump out an inch but on the 231 the HEI blocks that option.

    :confused::confused::confused:

Only thing I see is to cut off the filler neck and I could shorten it an inch or so.

I'd go with a remote reservoir, there's GM versions that use the same pump & mount geometry but trade the Spam Can for a smaller round housing.

If I had to choose between them? I'll take the power steering over power brakes, on something the size of a CJ, every single time. I've got manual brakes, using a Ford Master, with the K10 Discs, and 11" Bendix Drums out back, and it stops just fine.

Why use that particular power brake booster assembly? Have you considered using something else. For example, on my 1945 FF I used a mid-80s S10 booster and master cylinder assembly which mounts directly to the firewall. No interference with my v6 or anything else for that matter.

I’m done for tonight but I’ll get some photos tomorrow.

Now there’s an option I didn’t know about. Any links or photos you can share?

I ran a 72-75 drum brake mc for years on a 4 wheel disc set up, fronts being full size chev pickup, and it worked great. It is shorter and would give you clearance. Or as other said, a different booster. Hydro boost might be shorter. I have it on one of my jeeps and could measure the length if interested. It will give you more power assist too and more clearance around rear of valve cover. Junk yards around here get $100 for a used hydro boost.

    I second the remote reservoir.
run the power steering box out to In for now. Leave the brakes alone.

Fwiw I plan to run power steering manual brakes. My parents 78 c10 was built power steering manual brakes.

X2 on the hydroboost. That's what I run , with my 231 . It's a significantly better system than the vacuum booster. it's also at least 8 ' away from the reservoir & much easier to do future work in the engine bay . IMHO, yours is a monster.

    Shiny can-

    Non-Shiny-

    Rebuilt complete pump-

    Big Goomba-

Or you can hit up your local pull-a-apart & nab everything off an Astrovan, which will likely have an extra port for hydroboost brakes.

If you get a new pump make sure the pressure output matches what your steering box is expecting.

Any 80's on up GM trucks & vans had Hydroboost systems , I do believe.

My vote is to ditch the power brakes if choosing one or the other. This is what mine looks like. Ford style 77 CJ disks up front, 11" drums out back and I believe a J-truck non power MC, she stops great. The option I see to keep both items you have is to get some tube and weld/braze a new filler neck on the side towards the motor.

X3 on the hydroboost since you already have the power steering pump. A lot of Astro vans used these too.

Would this “bolt on” with my YJ pedal assembly? I did LOTS of work to get what I have now. Don’t want to redo all of it.
