Does anyone know the pattern in which the felts are placed under the gas tank for a 1957 CJ5? Thanks.

You say, "felt" which sounds absorbent to me. The following link will give some other possibilities >>> http://www.earlycj5.com/xf_cj5/index.php?threads/145193/

I agree with Dave about using something else, unless you want a "pattern" of rust. I have used several things other than felt under the tanks to keep them from rattling and wearing metal against metal. The last one I did I used pieces of rubber fuel line, I have used sections of old garden hose.

Never worked with "store bought" so, no clue to proper placement, but I'd lay just enough to give support in an orientation that would allow the best drainage.

Whether using the felt or something else, I don't think you have to lay them out in any particular "pattern". I would only be concerned about not blocking drainage for the water, so don't build a dam with them.

I used 1/8” thick strips of ABS plastic. Noise free and seems so allow enough airflow to avoid rust.

UHMW plastic strips for me. This is the first I've ever heard of felt strips, you sure they're for a CJ? AFAIK the factory used welt or rubber.

I'd never use felt, it's not just an invitation to rust- it's like you're offering it full cable and an open bar as well. :(

I am pretty sure the felt strips came into use during WW2 due to the rubber shortage caused by Japan taking Burma. Any rubber parts on the Jeeps were substituted using either felt or leather. Wartime Jeeps weren't expected to last a long time so they weren't concerned with them rusting out.

Probably carried over into CJ2A production because it was cheaper than rubber. Felt, or webbing is a bad idea in places where water accumulates.

Rubber bungee cords here too. Also piling on that felt seems among the worst possible materials in that location.

So glad I read this! I didn't know there was supposed to be insulation under the tank... no wonder mine makes so much noise!
What are you all doing under the strap? I just placed some squares of 1/8" thick rubber sheet under the corners since that was all metal-metal when I received my Jeep and was squeaking like crazy.

It's been a long time since I set up one of these tanks, and I think I used nothing under the strap. The cut-off bungees stand tall enough and are soft enough that the strap fitted tightly and did not squeak ... IIRC. You could put some rubber inner tube in there, or indoor-outdoor carpeting. I'd say there's no issue with holding water at that location, so the carpet would work well.

The strap originally had impregnated cotton welting riveted on similar to the welting on the grill but flatter. Just about anything that will provide some padding will work, including pieces of rubber.

Rubber strips found in my '57, not felt. I replaced them with 1/8" rubber floor-mat type material.

I used wood furring strips under my new tank, they hold the tank up enough to let me blow out any sand or dirt, and let enough air get under to dry it out.

20 mil pipe wrap tape in strips. You can layer to the height you desire.

I believe I've found the answer to your original question, though maybe too late to be of help to you:
