Not much to add today. I screwed up my back over the summer, and bending over this hot mess yesterday really flared something up. I’m in slow motion today.

I pulled the starter motor off the engine, since it’s apparently just dead weight.

I diced up some 1/8” and welded it under the trolley as a stiffener. I noticed a bit of bounce in the motor assembly; the long stretch of unsupported plate that the tower is welded to had some spring to it. This should take care of that, and also tamp any twisting it could see under load.

The rest of the morning was taken up with cutting these little tabs for the height adjustment. 16/32 pieces cut. I found that if I space the gaps at 3/4”, I’ll get the most options and the best yield.
after a cut, I can move it down:
    1 slot = 3/8” (veneer?)
    2 slots = 1 1/8” (finish out at 3/4” furniture grade)
    3 slots = 1 7/8” (finish out at 2-by-dimensional lumber)
    4 slots = 2 5/8”
    5 slots = 3 3/8”
    6 slots = 4 1/8” (standard 4x4)
    7 slots = 4 7/8” (true 4x4)

Once you have a cant with at least one flat side, you can saw any dimension you wish by shimming under the timber. Even bevels etc.

That was tedious and time consuming.

    But it works well.

I had a few minutes left over to start working on the on/off lever. I shortened the cable by about a foot by cutting the sheathing, then using a section of the upper tubing (old mount) to start building a new mount. Two holes in the tubing, then a quick zap zap to secure it to the sheath.

did something similar when I built a bandmill - but I drilled a series of holes, and the hanger had pins to engage them.

I pulled the old Honda gas tank off the scrap pile that was left over from the Hippo build. I used a hole saw to cut the petcock assembly out of the bottom…

and a jigsaw to cut the filler hole out of the top…

and also grabbed the rear driveshaft from the Rodeo… which had cardboard inside :susp:

and made an oil reservoir out of it all.

You can see where the oil dripper dumps the oil on the chain.

I found a brake lever assembly with a parking brake and a throttle cable from a 4-wheeler in one of my bins, so I adapted that to work for the on/off lever.

Pull it back and lock it for “run,” and bump it to shut it off and engage the flywheel brake for an instant stop.

I sharpened the chain teeth to 10° and got it ready to do a test drive, but it was pouring rain. :banghead:

First thing in the morning, I’ll try this out.

Regarding that open recoil pulley. We were 'lil Indian mini bike builders , back in the day. Our pal Mike chose to run his newly mounted Briggs 6 horse without the cover . When his leg rubbed up against it, while running , it tore it to hamburger.
    The Doc's
could never put it back together. Horrible dis figuration. They ended up removing that leg, due to complications & infections. He Died a few years later. It haunts me to this day, anytime I see one.
Please........Do Not run it that way........

Yeah, I’ll have to think about that. I’m not sure if I want to square the whole log at once; I’m afraid I’d lose too much material on the center pieces. My shop is set up to rip the live edges easily enough. I might just leave them live and rip them square after they’re dry.

I do need to figure out some dogs to keep the log in place. I have an idea… Hold my beer.

The character in this western birch.

    Today’s haul after 8 hrs.

I found the flaw in this system. With normal use of a chainsaw, the sprocket pulls the chain across the wood, and the nose sprocket sees very little torque; it’s basically an idler sprocket. On this, all the torque is being pulled around the nose sprocket. It doesn’t like that. It was fine for most of the day with the pine, but cutting the birch made me push it harder than I had been and it wrecked the nose.

There is always some darn thing.

Can you run the carriage the opposite direction, and eat sawdust?

I’d really rather not. I’d be concerned about what the sawdust would do to the track and wheels. This produces a huge amount, and it would pack in there and render it inoperable in one or two cuts.
I’d also need to redo to cutting angle to the other direction, and probably move the oiler to the other side so it wouldn’t get packed with crud.

Maybe with a longer bar, I could fit a dust diverter between the wood and the machine. I’ll have to give this some thought.

Or maybe just don’t cut dry birch. :)
