Nothing much to it, provided you have the correct hubs.

I can't think of any "pitfalls" or "tricks", but you do want locking tabs on the bolts, and I also put a dab of thread sealer on them.

I agree, the biggest issue I've seen with lockout hubs is that the bolts get loose. I bought a jeep once and the first time I drove it one of the hub flanges fell off. The bolts had been loose for so long they were hammered until they sheared off. The other side only had 1 or 2 intact bolts.

Remember the u joint lubes the upper king pin bearing. While almost every closed knuckle axle has leaked out it's lube, and few folks pay attention to this, remember to pop the t case in 4 or lock the hubs in occasionally to spin the lube up there (might not be a bad time to service those knuckle seals as well).

While it is a prevalent theory that the knuckle lube will take care of them, the king pin bearings should be serviced at intervals by packing them with wheel bearing grease.

Still not a bad idea to put it in 4 wheel drive every so often to spin the knuckles to lubricate the joints and bushings.

The original 90wt and drive flanges combine to slop enough lube to keep them happy. Locking hubs, infrequent use, and the prevalent lack of knuckle servicing combine to allow the bearings to dry out.

A step beyond that is to install the bottom tin "seal" from an early Bronco open knuckle D30 dampening kit. I did this years ago and have forgotten about the upper bearings since.

you can replace the hub bolts with studs to prevent them ever getting loose. Even if they are stripped out already. often you can put long ones in and catch more threads and have a solid stud. A few times I made studs i put long bolts in then cut them off to length and thread the end. Just dont use grade 8 too hard to thread.
