Dauntless Oil Pump

I have a question about these oil pumps. I see rebuild kits available for 'high volume' oil pumps. Will the High volume pumps retrofit to the original housing? Pro's and Con's? Will the oil pan have enough oil for a high volume pump? Please educate me.

 

The v6 block is limited by the size of the oil passages. The first passage from pump to #1 cam bearing is a choke point. If it has not been enlarged a high volume pump is of no gain and may cause premature wear to the distributor gear.
There is a specific set of instructions for enlarging the passages during rebuild. A high volume pump may be applicable then.
Even TA Performance doesn't recommend them in most performance engines.
A good front cover in spec with a properly set up oil pump is the best scenario. A HV pump will not make up for a worn cover or loose engine.
My OF231 carries almost 60lbs at 3k rpm and a solid 10-12 at hot idle. Stock pump, good cover.

 

The high volume kits are a spacer that is installed between the timing cover/punp housing, and the bottom filter housing. It includes taller gears, creating the larger volume.
As stated above, without opening up the passages in the block and timing cover, it really doesn't improve much.
A good pump housing and a proper functioning pressure relieve spring/valve is key to maintaining proper oil pressure.-Donny

 

Thanks for the information. Currently my Dauntless is a little slow to build oil pressure initially, but once up it holds above 30 driving and above 15 at hot idle. Gauge reads 0-15-30-45-60.

 

Back in the 80's a friend had low oil pressure in his Dauntless. He put in the biggest high volume kit with the strongest relief spring. When he started the engine the mechanical oil pressure gauge swung past 80 psi and blew the back off spraying oil all over the inside of the Jeep.

Needless to say he used a softer relief spring after replacing the gauge.

 

This may be a dumb question, but which way does the drill need to turn when you prime the oil pump. Clockwise or counter-clockwise?

By the way, after replacing to gears and installing the wear plate, I've got 25 psi hot idle...on an engine with 160k miles.

 

where did you fine your relief springs at? I am looking for a 40psi spring.

 

Came with the pump kit.

 

I did get one with the pump that put me at 60-65 psi, I was told that I could buy a 40psi spring? any Ideas?

 

If you cannot locate a spring for purchase you could resort to the old-time hack of removing the 60+ pound spring and shorten it slightly using a grinder. Keep it cool during the grind by periodically dunking the end in a water bath. Remove material in small increments to get to your desired pressure.

On the other hand, I've seen springs shimmed to increase pressure.

A new spring of your desired pressure would be the best way but the customizing of spring pressure by trimming or shimming has been done many a shade tree mechanics.
