Well, I just went back to the way I've been doing it, bench grinder with the wire wheel, media blast if possible, etc., maybe sometime in my life I'll find the ultimate way, however, if I have no more projects after the tractor, why bother

A number of "ultrasonic" cleaners are not ultrasonic at all, they only vibrate. It makes a difference.

I'd be searching for an old paint shaker.

I'd think some fine grit blasting media would do it but I'm not an expert on this, didn't even sleep in a Holiday Inn last night :(

    Pro Tip.

The next time you do... Take the bedding home with you. Thereafter... Every night is a Holiday Inn night. ;)

You must sleep on borrowed Holiday Inn bedding at home, that's the smartest thing I've ever read.

My solution isn't exciting but it's cheap, works pretty well, and requires no effort on my part. I just keep a coffee can of CLR and throw the random hardware into it. Does a great job of cleaning the crustiness off of old hardware. Also gets used a lot for old tools I come across.
