I had the Jeep up on the rack and couldn't help noticing that my wheel bearing was leaking.
I pulled the wheel, hub&drum (I was lucky and it didn't fight so very hard), and backing plate.
    Now I'm a little stuck.
I read you are supposed to use a slide hammer to remove the axle shaft but I don't have one that's set up for that. I tried setting blocks between the flange on the axle and the drum and using the axle nut in the hopes of sucking the axle out but it's pretty stubbornly in there so I thought I'd check in before I go and force something that shouldn't need force.
I also went to dig for or order a new outer grease seal and find myself confused.
Seals & Gaskets - Rear Axle - Axle - Shop by Category lists two options, one for most old Jeeps and one just for the 66-71 225. I also had a new seal in my parts pile (inherited along with the Jeep from my uncle/great-grandfather) but it's significantly smaller in the center than what came out. So, I'm not sure which one I should be using? DSC_0663.JPG
On the left, seal I found in a box. Right, freshly removed seal.

Retainer, shim, bearing shims (this isn't how it looks in the book, but whatever), and small rubber seal.

OK, so I looked at the manual and convinced myself it was fine to apply a bit more force and the axle pulled right out. I've included pics of the setup I used in case it might help another poor soul at some point.
Pulling the axle made for another head-scratched though. In the space where I expected to find the inner seal I found a battered metal ring. There is an inner seal, but it's waaay down in by the differential and I don't see any sign that it's rubbing on the axle shaft.

    start at about 5:30

These two videos do a good job explaining how all the seals and gaskets are set up
I'm not familiar with the differences of the seal on the V6 compared to the others so I can't offer suggestions there.

Thanks for that. From the picture.video it really does seem like my inner seal failed and somebody just used what was left as a bit of a shield! It's interesting what these old beasts have happen to them over the years.
Helpful tip on lathe polishing though: use some oil and your paper lasts a lot longer and spreads a lot less abrasive all over your ways.
