1970 Jeep Brochure

I bought a 1970 Jeep advertisement brochure off of eBay. Here are scanned photos of the brochure.

 

Ha that's a fun read! Look at the gawd-awful smog pump on the illustration of the Dauntless. Just the smog pump alone would take up half the engine compartment!

Interesting that the ‘70 brochure shows the fender reflector in some pics and the hood reflector in others, and retains the under-seat tank and 2-pc rear axle.

And a front-only PTO. I've been searching for information of when the rear PTO was dropped. I had assumed when the gas tank was moved. But it now appears it was pre-1970.

The cover shot shows a chrome front bumper available (also in the "racing stripes" box), but a reason why many Jeeps are no longer with us due to severe rust. Its fun to see a manufacturer advertise their vehicle with passengers standing in the rear bed. I've seen that done many times including 3 across in a CJ5 I later bought after rolling it with all 5 aboard.
At least there there is a rollbar! I don't see a Renegade decal, so is the cover shot a "462"?

Showing driving in the surf is irresponsible on Jeep's part, I think. Where I worked, they sold quite a few Jeeps to the beach cities for patrol vehicles on the beaches. They'd last maybe 3 years? And these were driven on the sand, not in the surf. Came back as badly rusted trades on new Jeeps. Brian (the boss) would not put them on the lot - they got bondo and paint and went directly to the car auction.

 

Based on the date at the bottom right corner of the last page, this brochure appears to have been printed in December of 1969, just before the finalization of Kaiser's sale of Jeep to AMC during Feb. of 1970. Kaiser Jeep typically included their logo prominently on their brochures, but interestingly, this one doesn't indicate either Kaiser or AMC (though the Kaiser logo is visible on the hubcaps).

I'm guessing the lack of corporate ownership being clearly indicated may have been an agreed-upon strategy between buyer and seller during the transition. This would have allowed AMC to have some printed literature on hand at Jeep dealerships after completion of the sale, prior to when they started printing AMC-marked brochures, advertisements, etc.

 

I can't believe they would say something as controversial as "... The Earth's not flat" as a matter of fact!!

 

This is great! I love this stuff. In all of the photos, the rear view mirror appears to be painted white. Mine is painted black, but I think it has been repainted over the years.

 

1970, I was 8 years old. On the way up to the mountains, we had to stop by the Jeep dealership in Winston Salem so I could drool over the new Jeeps.

Got some old brochures from 1970 like this, I have always kept them. I will try to scan and post one also. Great memories. Salesman got to know us, said one year, "your son will love this." A Super Jeep with the V8. My dad test drove it with me riding. Couldn't pry the smile off my face. I was hanging on for dear life. He parked the Jeep and told the salesman, "Who needs that kind of power in a Jeep?" He only test drove it to give me a thrill. I will never forget that.

Well, that"s mine! Mine is exports, vent windshield.
What is interesting is that the first picture shows a CJ5 driving in the sea...
It means that in some time it will be totally rusted, time to buy a new one.

The floorboards were probably rusted out by the end of the photo shoot.

 

Though the rearview mirrors could easily be mistaken for white in the brochure photos, they were actually originally painted silver on the back. Here's a photo of an NOS one:

 

I wondered if they were silver.
