So I bought this 1961 cj 5 about 6 months ago the only thing it had that was any good was a clean title and current tags. The body is in fair shape a few wrinkles and some rust in the floor boards that will need to be repaired. 20201129_144610_compress1.jpg 20201129_144622_compress51.jpg

Wow thought my frame was f@##&d. I’m Interested in seeing how your new frame turns out as I’m at the same point in my Jeep build.

Lots more cleaning today 60 years worth of cooked on crud. Got the spindles and intermediate gear boxed up and sent off to Mcruff. My next thing to do is try and resurrect the transmission it was full of water and like three inch’s of something that resembled road tar with a horrible stench.

Painted the axle and backing plates and did some body work on the differential cover it had a large dent in it.

Got the hubs installed today. I like to hand pack the wheel bearings no clean way to do it just got to dig in and get sloppy. Tried to change the pinion bearing but flaps gave me the wrong one. Also waiting on studs and lock nuts for the locking hubs. Took the shift rods out of the vinegar solution and cleaned them up they are not salvageable so back to the drawing board on what to do for.a transmission this heap came with 2 but neither one is any good. 20210117_135710_compress0.jpg

Today was a bad day it seems like I've been taking one step forward and two backwards. I went to put the rear cover on the rearend and seen a bolt on the power lock carrier that looked weird checked it and it was broke off in the carrier. Everything comes apart again pull the carrier and disassembled it got the broken bolt out luckily it came out easy drilled a couple small divots in it and used a small punch to spin it out done for the day I will put it together in the morning. 20210205_160845_compress78.jpg 20210205_160845_compress78.jpg 20210205_160845_compress78.jpg

I kind of arrived late, but if those are D30 spindles, and 19 spline axles, you have to take like .010" out of the middle to get them through the spindle. There are guys exploring ways to get 30 spline axles through there, but that's another topic.

Ya I kind of discovered this the hard way but was able to nibble enough out of the spindles and off the middle of the shafts to get them to fit a coworker trued them up for me where the inner bearing rides on the shafts so we are good to go now till the next lion roars.

Success finally done with the rear axle if I was to work on more axles I would make a jig to hold it.jack stands work but my wife found no humor in sitting on the axle to hold it in place while I torqued the pinion and carrier bearing caps. 20210206_162832_compress91.jpg

More progress and delays waiting for parts it seems to take forever to get parts .I finally got the transmission and transfer case done both units completely rebuilt . I’m now working on the front axle nothing special just stripped it down and painted it. And once again waiting for parts to arrive.

Search “jeep parts” on Redding Craigslist. There’s a guy with a ton of stuff that wants it gone for cheap.

I installed all new bearings. new friction disks in the power lock thank you jeepsterjim . This small part of the project has been a total nightmare getting parts for I only used USA made bearings so that was the delays sourcing them. Next on the table is the 283 small block the block and heads are at the machine shop getting cleaned up and new valve seals installed along with new cam bearings when they come back I will order the rebuild kit I already have the cam and gear drive timing set
