This may belong in another forum so, mods, feel free to move it if necessary.

After reading several threads, I am left with one question, to come after a quick intro.

So, I bagged a set of later style cj slots tonight. Not the early D slots. Threads revealed to me that the early D slots used a lug nut with a shank and washer whereas the later sausage slots used a tapered acorn style lug nut. Sooooooo.........one of the 4 wheels I got has wallowed out lug holes. My question, could the lug holes on said wheel be professionally drilled out to accept the earlier style lug nuts?

I am unaware of being able to repair wallowed out tapered lug holes on aluminum rims but, maybe it can be done. Thus my question of drilling out the bad holes to a larger diameter for the shank style lug nut.

Not even sure I'm gonna use these wheels but, I'd like to know my options before I decide. Thanks folks.

I would suggest getting new holes machined for the acorn style and weld the old holes shut.

The original Jeep rims used the regular tapered lugnuts. Aftermarket rims use the shank and washer. A machine shop may be able to fix but they are unlikely to do any machine work on a wheel due to liability.

You may be able to have a welder weld the holes smaller and set it up on a Bridgeport and bore them like you need them. Good luck

If you look around your local area, there is likely a wheel repair shop that can help you. Out here in California, there are a bunch of places that repair mag wheels with steel inserts like these. Wheel Inserts
If you call these guys, they can probably point you to an installer in your area.

Don't know if this will help or not, but here is a picture of my D slots showing what the lug holes look like when using shank and washer lug nu;ts

Here is the thread I was referenced about lug nut styles. Page 2 is where Mike, WYOMIKE, states about the shank type lug nuts found on his original Renegade that he bought new. There is lots of good info about these wheels in the thread.

Thanks for the detailed picture above Mike. I was hoping you would chime in.

Thanks Kyle, for the link to the inserts. I wondered if such a thing existed. I suppose they are perfectly safe and might be the best option, allowing the use of all the same style lug nut.

No problem. Those are the wheels that Daryl picked up for me.
