I've looked at several pictures on line and can't figure out for sure if there are rubber mounts between the toe boards and the large frame supports in the front. I'm talking about the first mounting positions for the tub on either side right below the firewall. Do these get bushings too? There are small risers as a part of the hat channel welded to the triangles which would seem to lift the tub up already but it seems that it would be metal to metal if I don't install some rubber there. Hate to start a new post for this but looked and couldn't find an answer. Any help would be appreciated. I didn't get to see how my tub was originally. These were completely rusted out.

Hello, did you ever get a answer or fix on this question? I just bought a 72 and both these are rusted out. Do you know where to find new ones or how to fix them? Thanks.

I believe so. If you have pictures of the area in question on your jeep that would be easier to narrow down the answer

Jeda8, I ended up fabricating my own hat channels and triangular toeboards. I finally found a picture that showed me there are flat rubber pads instead of full rubber mounts at these locations as well. Google 1972 cj5 and you will find pics of a red and white cj5 from Alaska that says Denali State Park on it. Lot's of good detail photos to show you how things were originally set up.

The pictures from that jeep are gonna be useful when I redo my exhaust back to factory. I remember when it was for sale, lots of character and cool gear, whoever bought it is lucky!

I believe the OP is talking about these pictured below. If you look close, you can see some kind of staples in there. I believe Timgr once said there may have been wood inside them for support and some kind of reinforced rubber pad underneath between the support and the frame.

Here is the way I did mine. Regular body bushing and a piece of conveyor belt, (tire rubber would work) for the other support.

IMG_2017111.jpg Man that is interesting. Last fall when I was having my hat channels replaced 2 of those bracket things were included and I couldn't figure out what they were for. Guess my 74 was setup a little differently, I'm presuming this is still factory as all the other mounts were.

dane71 This is what my 73 looked like before and after I refurbished it. I tried it without the belt , but it put the other body mounts out of alignment, fenders also, when I tightened the mount bolts. With the belt in place, everything stayed where it should.

Jeda8, This is the same area. You are showing a top view of the toe board support and dane71 and me posted pics of the bottom of the same support. I can get a top view pic.

Does anyone know if any manufacturer sells the stock body mounting kit? The picture Dane 71 posted looks like what is in the factory manual (big bushings for the forwardmost mounting areas).

Quadratec, Omix/Ada and apparently others sell a kit with two different thickness rubber discs that really don't seem to match the factory bushings.

You can buy an entire log of rubber body mount rubber, then cut off the lengths you need. I have "Prothane" brand mounts but there will always be a couple of locations that require a puck thickness not included in the kits.

Cut it with a band saw or if you like the smell of frying tires use the chop saw.

Back from the grave... I'm not sure what the protocol is for reviving oooold threads and asking a question associated (hopefully) with the thread.

So I have a 74 with cracks on the front face of both front fenders, one about 3" and the other 5" both basically vertical in orientation...
Would I be correct in thinking the toe board support being bad is the reason for the fender cracks ?
And on a 74 is there a round bushings or just the flat belting ?
TIA... If I'm wrong for resurrecting the thread my apologies...

Best to start a new thread with a descriptive title. No reason to revive an old one, but no crime if the post is on topic. Is your question on topic? Only sorta-kinda IMO.

I recall the cracks are common. Maybe they are related to flex, maybe not. If you do a lot of trail driving and get flexed out, you'll get buckling in the body steel in the door areas too.

A '74 has the soft round pucks everywhere.

Why do you think the toe-board support is bad? No question the toe-board supports are there for a reason, maybe to better couple the body to the frame, maybe to support the body generally. Certainly Jeep put them there for a reason. Or maybe you mean it's rusted away? If so, the body would bend less, and you'd see fewer problems with the body, I'd think.

NB that SB applies to 1972. Seems like they all had the thick, squishy cushions at that location at least by 1974, maybe in 1973 too. My current '75 has them.

Possible it's there to work with the clutch bell cranks that appeared in '73? The '72 had a cable and body flex would not have mattered as much. Seems like a drastic fix for poor clutch performance with the bell crank though.
