What's this one out of? I picked up an NP435 with 208D transfer case out of a mid-'80s Ramcharger a while back. The bolt pattern on the front of the case looks a bit weak as there are no bolt holes below the input shaft. Mine had a cracked front bearing retainer and broken spring for the shifter cane on the top.
I'll guess your un-identified metal may be from that top tension spring for the shift cane.

Edit: I just went out to have a look at mine. It has two PTO ports, one on each side.

80 something f350 ramp truck. It looks the same diameter as one of the third fourth syncro springs some one had already been in it judging by the rtv. it was two wheel drive.

Not too bad I drained it for a few days. Case all steamed clean I’m leaving the patina and going right for reassembly

Always liked the 435. One of the shortest 4 speeds, good shifter. Always a bummer the adapter is so stinking long.

I guess I'm just used to the 1" or so ( factory)adapter on my t18. Course the 435 is an inch or so shorter than the t18. Probably moot...

Upon inspecting the innards.....I ordered the master kit from novak. the races showed some pitting and just looked bad. the third and fourth syncro steel looked fine the aluminum ridged part looked worn some too.

put the transmission in ....about 8 times yesterday, clutch throw out bearing too short, got a longer one, clutch not working. loosen transmission slightly clutch works. take out transmission, verify clutch disk in right, back in. no clutch. after going a few rounds i figured out the splined part of the input shaft was hitting the pilot bushing by a tiny bit.,reamed the end of the bushing some, still no good. Not being or having access to a machinist to turn the shaft, that would mean another tear down, i made a 1/16 plate to put in between the bell and transmission. the boy should be here this morning to try again.

When you reassemble it make sure you check the endplay clearance for the 3/4 synchronizer assembly and/or 3rd gear iirc. Been awhile but I remember it requires two sets of feeler gauges. That's what those internal star shaped shims in your disassembly pics are for. Also check input endplay and make double darn sure it's right. That sets the clearance on the tapered roller input bearing and is very important.

yup all the end play was good and 3rd 4th was at the short end of the suggested setting per novak .

got it installed today the transfer case just clears the right side exhaust, and the cross member lined up with the rear set of holes in the frame and didn't need any shims to clear the floor.I used a cross member from one of the old frames in the parts hoard.

Good point about checking end play on the synchronizer, might also want to check crankshaft end play while your there. Nothing takes out the engine thrust bearing faster then to have too little.
